|
|
Hi,
I know this is a bit of an old chestnut, but has anyone tried to fit a 1.9TD AAZ using a T25 diesel bellhousing to an early bay?
I've read plenty of information on how it's not very easy to use a T25 bellhousing on a late bay, but how about an early bay which doesn't have the bellhousing mountings. There appears to be much more space because of this, but is there enough?
Secondly has anyone got a T25 diesel bellhousing for sale and I'll have a go myself?
Cheers

there wont be enough room to get the starter in , even on an early bay using a bay gearbox and linkage.
if your fitting a vw diesel then think about using a t25 gearbox with a side shifter , this will cut out a lot of noise and viabration, also you can mount the box and engine low enough to fit the t25 bellhousing and starter. _________________ 1969 bay with vw 1.6td |

Caddy,
Thanks for that.
I had thought of using a T25 box in a bay, thanks for confirming it is possible/sensible!
Is this a conversion that you have done?
Any tips, problems to get around, photos?
Cheers

That was quick!
Great photos, thanks.
A few questions though.
Did you first manage to fit it at 50degrees using the T25 diesel bellhousing, and do you have any old photos of this?
At 50degrees was the width between the chassis legs a problem, I'm thinking that the turbo might be quite tight?
Thanks very much

Caddy,
thanks again for a quick reply and for all the extra info.
That's one serious bus you've created!
I like the idea of using the passat bellhousing, I didn't realise that they unbolted. I had thought of putting an adaptor between a standard transaxle and a T25 derv. bellhousing to make it upright. I assume the passat bellhousing works much better.
Thanks for all the help so far.
Cheers

the bell housing is from a 1987-88 passat, it doesn't unbolt, but i cut off a 50mm slice which leaves enough to fit the starter engine side .
then with a 10mm adapter plate it bolts to a t2 bellhousing that has 50mm cut of it.
this means that the clutch works with the standard t2 setup .the engine its set to the near upright position wich keeps it oiltight.
i put the flywheel from a t25 into the lathe and turned down the engine side so that i could fit the ring gear.
i use the 87 passat engine mounts onto an engine cradle that then uses t25 diesel engine mounts to the body and a custom made t25 diesel gearbox nose mount . this keeps viabration and noise to a minimum.
gear shift and stick from a t25 , again this cuts down viabration and noise .
when i first did the conversion we used a t2 gearbox with standard shifter and the engine lying on its side with t25 diesel mountings ,the van was so noisy that we ended up using ear defenders on holiday. _________________ 1969 bay with vw 1.6td |

Thanks Caddy,
I think I'll probably start with just a T25 diesel bellhousing on a T2 box(as you did).
I know the gearing will be rubbish but if it works out I can swap it for a 2 litre. I'll take your advice and use soft engine mounts to keep the noise/vibrations down.
If that fails I'll try with a T25 box, lowered.
Thanks for the help and photos.
Cheers
