Mods feel free to move this post to where it should be as i wasn't really sure where to post it.
I've been lurking on the forum for a while now but only just got around to registering.
I've been considering fitting a turbo diesel engine to my 1973 bay westy as with its stock 1600 single carbed twin port it canny pull the skin off a rice pudding and the missus is complaining about how little MPG it does every time we use it.
As a total conversion virgin i've been carefully reading every post i can find but am still left with loads of questions.
Apart from the turbo diesel engine, a suitable adapter plate, flywheel and radiatior what else is actually needed?
I'm unsure which diesel motor to use but i'm heavily swayed towards running an intercooled 80BHP 1.6TD out of a 92 passat that a mate has living in his drive. Its a 1V code unit i think.
I've been told with a few mods to the boost pressure and injection pump it'll easily make 100BHP which sound nice.
Not sure if it'll fit in a bays engine compartment at the 15 degree it was mounted in the passat or if it'll need the sump and other gubbins off a 1.6TD JX motor from a T25 to mount it at the 50 degree angle. |

well if you have an engine then thats good
i may be corrected but all you need from the t25 deisale is the bell housing this will bolt to your 1600 gearbox and give the required angle of dangle
allthough a 2ltr gearbox is preferable they seem very scarce nowadays
im sure some people will add some other buits |

That wasn't so scary was it Zebedee
Glad you registered welcome
Caddy...
Interesting that you use the T25 box Caddy.. would a standard box with the T25 bellhousing not work ? looks like you have a bit of clearance above the engine.. I'm guessing the 2ltr T25 box has better ratios than the standard 1600 box is it a 5 Speed one ?
Zebedee..
You will probably want to get a heater matrix so you can benefit from the free heating available from the water cooled engine
I guess the most difficult part of the conversion is mounting the engine and finding somewhere effective to stick the rad. I have to say Caddy's rad set up is one of my faves.. both practical and discrete I think. Wiring can often be fun but that depends on the engine. Other things to consider is a fuel return back into your tank, exhaust, a hatch above the engine is a must I would say to make life so much easier.
Keep the questions coming and hopefully the answers will keep coming
Help is only a post away

How's your rear shocks setup working?
Did you leave the original springs as well?
Looks like. |

coil overs on the front and rear to take the extra weight , leaving the standard springs in place . works very well , but my van is heavy grossing 2200kg empty on the weighbridge . _________________ 1969 bay with vw 1.6td |

its 4 speed air cooled t25 box and has good ratio's for the diesel ,also the strongest box going.
the side shift mechanically isolates the box from the shift cutting down noise.
i had an engine mounted using a t25d bellhousing but never could keep oil in the damn thing. so mounting it upright keeps it oiltight.
there is no need for a access trap above my engine , i can get to everything from the rear ok. i could even pull the head in situ. _________________ 1969 bay with vw 1.6td |
