Head Gasket replacement

Got new head gaskets today. EJ20 NA

They were bought from The Gasket shop. One face has a metal 'spider web' sorta thing on it. There's two outer faces and one inner face.
I'm sure the metal side will become apparent when I remove the old HGs.

There's no rubber sealant on either face. Do I need to use a smidge of instant gasket on them?

as long as you can torque it properly with room available and pull bolts out you will be ok Grin

Got the heads off this affo, well loosened anyway.
What do I remove the old gasket debris off with, very carefuly scrape with a blade & use some thinners or summat?

The gaskets I got are wrong, can someone please identify what I have! (It's meant to be a 97-98 2l NA Impreza)

Here's my head:

Here's a shot of my old gasket and the supplied one (they're working on it BTW)

You can see I have 3 holes at the top & another 3 at the bottom of my head on both cylinders.

BTW it was the RHS (looking into engine bay) that had gone:

(Edit) It actually looks like the metal bit kinked & slipped during installation!

Also my bore's 91mm, stroke is approx 74mm so the total swept volume is IRO 1925cc - so it is a 2l.

The new gaskets look like they clear the water jacket ports fine so the new one should be ok to use, Can;t really tell without actually putting them on the head and checking all holes are fine, it doesn't matter whether they are 3 small or one big hole in the scheme of things.

Whoohoo. Job done.
Adjusted the valves while I was there - 3 were a bit out.

Fired her up and she sounded sorta different - proper "Woooka wooka" noise.
Took it for a spin and it was lacking in power. Looked at the engine and it was running a bit lumpy. "Uhuh", checked the injector leads - fine.

Engines run so much better if you connect all 4 spark plug leads.

Seems fine now, still getting bubbles in the header tank though

Just running it on water to flush the crud out of the system.

Drain down and refill during the week Happy
