Hi all,
Bit of an issue with my ej22 starting.
The engine is from a 1989/1990 i was told
It was running fine when it went in the garage but now wont start.
It has a spark
It has fuel to it (fresh)
When i disconnect a plug lead it sounds as if its trying but when all four are connected it turns over but doesnt sound as if its firing.
Any ideas
Ecu numbers are
D7
22611 aa670
A11 000 ra5 0320
Cheers tom |

If your 100% it has fuel and spark, so the ecu electrics are 100%. Then the timing is out.
I would recommend going back to the basics.
I would be conducting a visual check for the spark and doubly checking the ecu electrics, sensors and fuses.
Is the fuel getting up to the fuel rail? Does the fuel pump prime upon ignition?
What condition is the battery in?
During the ecu wiring swap was the self test mode retained? _________________ Think......

I think the Maf is faulty, it's showing fault 49.
Would that stop it running altogether or just run lumpy?
I read somewhere that it had a safety mode when a sensor goes down to stop it running. |

Very quickly checking code 49 it's a O2 resister...... No idea what that is.
Faulty Maf, To my knowledge it would compensate for a crappy signal until it failed and it would possibly go into limp mode and would still run. The back yard way to test the maf is to unplug it with the engine running. MAF is fault code 23.
These older engines are not a digital diagnostic system that work to a parameter set by the manufacturer. They're analog and will continue to work until the component fails and only then you may get a fault code bought up by the ECU but it's not for definite. _________________ Think......

Also if you search online for Subaru classic WRX service PDF. You'll find a Subaru service manual has a white Impreza wagon on the cover page. Go to the turbo MFI fault finding/trouble/diagnostic section. Their is a flow chart diagram on how to take car of a non starting vehicle with specifics to a Subaru. Should still be relevant to your EJ22. Certainly the involved process. _________________ Think......

the engine is a 2.2 from a legacy with the blinking led in the ECU, all the details I've found online say error code 49 is the Airflow sensor.
I've ordered one now anyway so hopefully that may make a difference when i drop it on this weekend.

Boom!!!

Code 49 is to indicate the wrong type of MAF sensor is fitted.
Code 49 still doesn't explain why your engine won't run though.
Also you have got the cold start signal wired in haven't you?
Neutral position switch?
Vehicle speed sensor?
Non of these though will explain why it's suddenly stopped running if it was fine before you garaged it. _________________ Think......

The maf may be the wrong no looking at those threads, think it should be a 190 but is currently a 160.
Ecu is
D7
22611 aa670
A11-000 ra5
The cold starts never been connected, what colour is the wire at the ecu? I'll connect it and see if it helps.
I'm not sure about the neutral and speed sensors, the loom etc was already running in a bay I just moved the whole lot bay to split.
When I was previously running it was only on the drive not driving around so I may just have been lucky to get it running at all. |

Right maf issue sorted, swapped it for a brown label one and codes gone....
Now the ecu is flashing
Code 35, wtf is purge circuit????
Any idea what this means? Should the led flash at all if I have no faults??? |

Hi
Try putting a bit of fuel into the manifold via a vacuum port, if it starts for a short time its a fuel supply issue if it doesn't it could be a weak spark issue.
You mentioned that it almost started with a plug lead off, that's usually a sign of poor spark
I do road service for a motoring organisation in Sydney called NRMA, we often get calls from people who keep trying to start their car and flood the motor, the motor has funny sound when cranking almost like a broken timing belt, this is caused by fuel washing oil off the bore and then the rings don't seal.
I often get flooded motors after people start the car for a brief time, say to move it out to wash the car, then start it again to put the car away, whole time its then been running is on cold start so the motor floods, on the third start it wont start as its flooded.
It can be cured by cranking it with full throttle until it starts of fitting new plugs.
