Hi,

I recently bought a 1984 Wolfsburg Edition Westfalia over here in Germany already equipped with a EJ22 swap out of a 1995 Legacy. The swap has the OEM Vanagon ignition switch and key and also has the subaru ignition switch and immobilizer unit in the engine compartment. (Because the ECU would stop the engine without the correct key acknowledged by the immobilizer unit.)

Now I would like to simplify this a bit and use the Subaru transponder from the key and the transponder reading ring from the Subaru ignition switch with the Vanagon ignition switch.

Plan is to mount the reading ring at the OEM Vanagon switch and put a Vanagon key blade into the Subaru key... Extend the wiring for the transponder reading ring and maybe the immobilizer unit from the engine compartment to the dashboard.

Has anyone of the Subaru swappers done this before - I think I read something like this but can't find the page anymore...

Any ideas and hints are very much appreciated !
Especially I'd like to know if anyone has a wiring diagram with the immobilizer unit, because all the diagrams I found were from US cars that didn't have immobilizer until 1999.

I already found some useful information on the RJES homepage so I thought, maybe I should ask here.

Thanks and Greets
Sven from Germany

Hi Sven,

What you wish to achieve is commonly done with a VW TDI conversion and a VW flip key.

The flip keys can easily be purchased on eBay and they have a built in internal holder for the VW immobiliser chip to fit into.

Now I've no idea what the Subaru key or chip looks like myself. But I would be inclined to pull the Subaru key apart and attempt to fit the chip into the flip key. You will also have to bring the immobiliser ring up front to the ignition barrel.

You will need to "fit" your vanagon key to the flip key. This is a simple procedure and can be done buy chopping the vanagon key to fit.

The flip key conversion has been covered over on club 80-90. In saying all this though I did this to my Cheetah key and the thing doesn't work. It won't read the chip. So I'm back to two individual keys.

On a side note, to my crap knowledge, Subaru did not fit the factory immobiliser to their 1995 "Phase 1" vehicles. It came in later post 1996 " Phase 1.5 / Phase 2". I think your engine is later then you believe if it does infact have a Subaru factory immobiliser. If you pull the yellow oil filler cap their will be a date moulded inside the cap, it's possible this is the engines manufacture year if it's the original oil cap. Also I would presume you have a single cool pack on top of the inlet manifold with 4 HT leads to the cylinder spark plugs as opposed to the " coil on plug " types more commonly found with the earlier phase 1 engines. Again though the ignition systems are all interchangeable should the ignition system been converted.

Hey Kai,

thanks for the throughout answer. I will have a look at Club 80-90 and will try my luck with my install.

Thanks
Sven
