EJ22 '72 Bay electrical gremlins!

Evening everyone.

I'm having a bit of trouble with my EJ22 powered bay. Essentially it cut out on the motorway and now will not start.

When the ignition is switched on, the fans are constantly kicking off and on randomly as is the fuel pump and the relay. I've changed this, but with no success.

I'm pretty sure I'm getting fuel, but no spark.

Any ideas where to start would be welcomed!

Check your ignition switch is not starting to break down and give intermittent power to the ecu.

I've got one ordered so will hopefully pop it in tomorrow.

I've also found out my alternator's goosed, so that's gone for a rebuild.

I've changed the switch and it's still the same.

I'm not sure on the year of the engine as the conversion was carried out a couple of owners ago. How would I go about finding this out?

Impreza from 95-99

First thoughts, sounds like it's in test mode. However that's not random. Those things cycle over and over.

If it's a faulty ignition switch, it wouldn't randomly cycle the fans on and off. Fans are usually ecu controlled. Unless temp sensor is goosed, then they stay on. Only time the fans turn on then off is during test mode.

How are your fans wired and controlled?

Also goosed battery/alternator are capable of doing weird poo.

The fans are wired off a temp switch as far as I'm aware. Currently they are tripping off and on when the ignitions on and the engine is not running though. I've shorted the power to these across the ignition relay plug and the same is occurring.

On another note the alternator is with a local repair shop who have told me it's knackered. Whilst it's been off the van Its exhibiting exactly the same symptoms. Hopefully this could be to blame.

How are your fans wired up?

Whats controlling the fans? ECU?

What is actually clicking? sounds like its a relay controlling the Fans thats clicking.

You should be able to hear the fuel pump priming the fuel system with the ignition going on.

Engine has wasted spark coil pack so post 1996/7 I believe. Also believe these should have the subaru immobilser also fitted.

I would be tempted to try bypassing the ignition switch feed to the subaru loom. is there a fuse for the main relay wiring? if so run a power cable to there and bypass all the ignition switch wiring.

also if your alternator was knackered then chances are the battery is not in such a good state. Try charging it and getting it tested. I spent a couple of days after finishing my conversion trying to get the fucker to start until I realized the battery was flat.
