maf issue?

hi all
i have a problem with our 1996 ej22 converted westy syncro and i am hoping that someone will be kind enough too help. i converted the from a jx using mostly rjes parts
since the conversion it has run very well as i expected, with one slight problem intermittently if you were coming to a stop it would stall, this was quite regularly, also if you were cruising on the motorway at any speed every 20 or 30 mins there would be a complete loss of power as if you have turned off the ignition. it would refire with in a second or 2 and continue on as normal untill it happened again.
to day i drove around 10miles parked at the shops and it would not restart. i did a diagnostic test (joined the black wires) and fault code 23 came up. (maf problem) now i had a spare maf the same part no but the terminals are differnt. and this did not work either.
in the end i had to diss the maf connection and got it running (very rough) and limped her home.
do any one have any thoughts on this.

Very possibly for the maf to have died, have you tried spraying carb or brake cleaner through it to clean the internals? Does work sometimes, if not then a new maf is in order........

There is a crude test for a dodgy MAF sensor, can't exactly remember what it specifically was but with the engine running unplug the MAF. It will either continue to run or it'll die. I believe continue to run would indicate a muggered MAF as the ecu has learnt to run with the current poor MAF signal.

Also stalling at junctions isn't that a speed sensor fault indication? Although saying that if your only able to pull one code off then your ecu is happy with the speed senser signal it's receiving.
