Hi all, new on here but not to Vdubs...Subaru's...Yes new to them. Im planning a Subaru conversion in my late bay project. Been gathering lots of info and tips off of the forum for quite a while now. My question is, want to fit a in tank pump etc but not happy about welding a fuel tank!.. So cant I just put the Subaru pump into a metal plate, cut a hole in the bay fuel tank and screw/bolt and seal the plate??? OR am I being thick and missing something?
Cheers Tim

It's not a bad way to go about it providing you have a flat area to create a seal against. The fuel sender on my tank had a simple rubber seal sealing everything so no reason a similar creation couldn't be done for a fuel pump.

If I recall correctly the welding for the fuel tank is basically an oval ring with threaded holes.

You wanna make sure the fuel pump pick up is in the right area.

Obviously you could go external fuel pump..... But more involved though if you want to get it running correctly.

Thanks for the reply Kai I intend using the Subaru gauges, is the Subaru sender combined in the pump unit? and...could it be used or would I have to use a universal sender in the original tank hole?

Testing my memory here.... I'm pretty sure the Subaru sender is a stand alone unit to the intank pump. Therefor you would be better off going for a universal fuel gauge sender unit for the Subaru display.

Or seek a radiator company.... They usually do fuel tank repairs. I was quoted roughly £150 recently to cut my tank open, clean and paint the inside, seal te inside and powder cost the outside, however upon taking it there the guy told me I was being too picky about my tank

You need some kind of baffling in the tank around the pick-up. Welding isn't a problem, just be careful and wash it out first.. If you are really paranoid you could fill it with your welding gas to create an inert atmosphere.

The subaru sender is actually in two parts as the tank is a saddle design over the prop..

Hi

I went intank 044 pump in my 1303. Its not that hard, I had friend do all the welding for me.

It would be much easier to get a EFI bay tank and just run an external pump.

One thing that was giving me a problem with my intank pump, fuel was seeping up the threads, some good goo fixed this.

I knew i'd seen pics before...Just reread your thread, how much did you have to shorten the pump by and how did you do it?

Been doing a lot of reading on welding tanks, from just washing it out, filling it full with water and welding with the water still in, running an exhaust through it...To someone being killed welding a tank Eeeek
