I've had a search through and asked a few people but what subaru engine would you recommend for a type 1 conversion
I have seen foresters go cheap and legacys too but thought the best people to ask are those that have tried and succeeded
So in your opinion which one ????
2.0 2.0t 2.2 2.5 and the reasons why you'd choose it (oh and I enjoy going fast cheaply but want reliability too) |

That's a big debatable question. Assuming your gonna keep the stock gearbox then I'd think your going to be after any of the single cam engines. This would mean you can keep the transmission in its current place and hang the engine off the transmission and keep the new engine fully underneath the engine lid. _________________ Think......

It's going to be a project and I'm used to a bit of cutting and shaping too make fit
From what I understand so far is a subaru box can be used if you use an expensive reversed cut ring n pinion which even tho is expensive my be the better way to go as it's designed to handle the power of a subaru and yes I know they break too if you treat them hard as can any box (I say that as my v8 powered mk2 consul is sat with a broken trans as we speak lol)
But I'd still like to get the "right" engine to start with and not get one that I'll have to change sooner rather than later
The trouble is I know absolutely nothing about Subarus hence the LARGE question so to speak |

Well now your opening a huge can of worms with very different outcomes. Ultimately though it all depends on what vehicle the market has to offer you and at what price.
The earlier vehicles (phase one engine) are going to offer you a cheaper and easier route with regards to wiring compared to a 2014 model Subaru, the compromise here is going to be a higher mileage engine.
Now I know that a phase one engine be it a 2.0 turbo will suffer from piston slap and probably need a rebuild after 60k miles. However the same engine without a turbo and being SOHC will give you double the mileage.
The 2.5 phase one engines suffer from head gasket failures which is a days work to replace.
Realistically every engine has its common failures, with Subarus I'd probably say they're are all as bad as each other. But as a whole are good engines which after time will all eventually require maintenance and tlc.
With the Subaru box, I'd more likely go this route if I was chasing the higher output engines. You can get away with using a type one box with a Subaru engine if your a sensible driver. Like anything if you want to abuse it you'll no doubt break it.
For reference, a Subaru TY754 transmission is rated to 320BHP and a TY752 can handle less due to flexing in the case. For the average man that's going to be more then enough to handle in a type 1. I'm lead to believe you can push 120BHP through a standard type 1 box but I'm no expert on type one transaxles. I ditched mine years ago.
What you should really be asking yourself is if you want a turbo on your engine or not.
Turbo I'd go Subaru gears and non turbo I'd go type one.
Either way make sure you buy a complete vehicle. I bought a donar car, did my conversion whilst selling the parts and I broke even with the outlay from the car and reasonably quickly too. I sold pretty much everything including the headlining and fuel filler neck. It was an import Impreza turbo with lots of Gucci bits though. £2000k you can buy a roadworthy Impreza sti, 4k and you'll have a sti forged engine too. I paid 1k for mine which had been written off. _________________ Think......

So far I've been offered just the parts (engine, loom, gearbox and such like)
The most recent being one with a broke cambelt 03 wrx
now If it was a car that I wanted to use as a daily straight away then I'd run away (not walk) but as I'm collecting the parts to do the conversion (haven't got a body or floor yet) I'm tempted to get it and do the work that's needed while I can easily
I'm guessing valves would be damaged but would this be more expensive than its worth
Or should I wait for a whole car ???? |

They are an interference engine, but they are designed that should the belt come off that the valves will return to their closed position. So it's possible no damage has been done however changing a head on one of these is a piece of piss.
If you can get all those components from the same car then id go for it. _________________ Think......
