Basically. Get yourself one of these
In a 1.9 tdi, 1997 or 1998 or 1999. Not sure when they finished.

Or

The reason you need only a VW Passat or an Audi A4 is that their engine is mounted lengthways, these cars have the gearbox you need as well.

The best engine of this era car (1997/1998)
Is the AFN code.
It's got 110 BHP as standard and is a pre PD engine.
There's less electronics, however it dies have an ecu, immobiliser etc.
it's debatable whether you need the dash clocks (speedo etc)
Some say there is an immobiliser within this aswell which you will need.
In total, you need, ecu, key+ignition barrell, dash clock set.
I elected to find a car running well on an afn engine.
Take ALL the loom coming from the engine to ecu to key and ignition barrel to dash clocks etc. basically everything.
If you scroll back a page or two you'll see a video of where I have the engine starting with its own key and ticking over on a pallet. Just add fuel.

I then removed the gearbox off the engine,( which was included in the sale)
And physically rotated it exactly 180 degrees and offered it up to the engine and worked out how it would bolt up.
I then bolted a piece of plywood to the engine, with a cutout for the clutch, flywheel and bolted the gearbox to it.
I then had the basis for an adapter plate that would be made from 15mm steel plate. The gearbox would then be bolted to this 15mm plate in its rotated state.
Here's where the fun started. Because of the plate being 15mm. I had to 'shave' this thickness off of the gearbox edge.
Again see my thread.
I hope I've made some sense.
