|
|
Im in the process of getting a 1.9 IDI engine fitted into my '73 bay with KEP adaptor.
Ive encountered two problems which I hope that you guys may be able to assist with. (It was readign the vwkd guide and this forum which inspired be to convert to a watercooled engine):-
1. The water pipe at teh back of the head fouls the Tank. Is there anyway around this or is there another fitting which protrudes less?
2. The inlet manifold is too tall to fit into the engine compartment. Being a '73 it doesnt have a hatch and id rather not have to raise the level of the compartment if possible. Is there another manifold which would fit?
Any advice would be greatfully received. Cheers

Problem 1. Resolved. Turns out you dont need this outlet. Its possible to take a feed from elsewhere for heating.
Just need advice on the manifold hight now. |

the KEP adapter allows three different orientations for mounting the engine, vertical, 15 degrees inclined like the engine was in the Golf or 50 degrees inclined like the engine is in a type25.
If you've used the vertical position then I would expect the 1Y inlet manifold to hit the roof of the engine bay. Try the 15 degree inclination, I fitted mine like that and although I haven't fitted the inlet manifold yet it's looking like it'll fit comfortably.
Which orintation have you used? |

Trev, thanks for the reply. Its fitted Straight up . I must confess i didnt realise that the Golf had it fitted at 15o. Ill get it rotated and remake the engine mounts then it should all be done
Thanks again. |

15 degrees:
out of interest, how have you made the engine mounts? Any pics? My thread is a few down the list below this, as you can see it's in its infancy
where are you putting the raiator? What are you doing for a starter motor? |

Thanks for that Trev. Robin @ Busmeister is taking care of the conversion for me. The engine mounts hes mocked up are a thing of beauty. They use the Golf engine mounts and bolt up to where the support bar is located. When its finished ill sort some pictures out.
Radiator is going to be from Fellows Speed Shop mounted underneath.
I was under the inpression that the stock starter would be man enough.
I guess you knew about the hose outlet on the back of the head already as your tank covers not cut up like mine. |

pics of the 15 degree mounted 1Y inlet manifold and cambelt cover clearance in my thread now
I don't think the air-cooled starter is up to the job of overcoming the compression of a diesel engine but I discovered a cheap workaround, also in my thread... |

Please make sure you post loads of photos up of your cooling system when you have it fitted.
We've heard it's great & would love to know more. _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

I want to see pictures of those mounts!
Here is a thread I found where the guy had to make an access hatch because the reinforcement ribs were in the way. I guess I depends on what intake you are running.
I plan to do the 1.8 gas conversion and will be using the digi II intake like this guy did so I suspect I will need to cut the panel. Come to think of it even if it did clear I would still cut the access panel. I am tired of working through the back hatch.

not a prayer! the golf one is a epicyclic reduction drive 1.7kw unit and the lawn mower one is direct drive and less than 1kw designed to turn over 8:1 compression motor not a 22:1 diesel if it did turn the engine over it would only be a few times before it burnt out _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

Hi,
re problem one, the other day i came across the design i did for the machinist to make a ally block to fit onto the heater outlet. If you ever decide to fit a heater i could send you a copy. |
