Hey guys, I have a buddy that had been doing some Vanagon swaps and has a few aluminum adapters and flywheels made up. I borrowed a kit to see what it was all about and I tried the ally adapter up to a T1 trans and it looks all good.

My concern is the flywheel. What would be different in the Vanagon/Subaru flywheel compared to a T1/Subaru flywheel?

Are the pressure plate holes any different? I know that they are usually a 228mm but could I run a 220mm clutch and pressure plate with the Vanagon/Subaru flywheel?

I run a 091 6-rib T1 box with a EJ22 engine and RJES bellhouse. I use the biggest VW clutch plate, being the 228mm.

This works well: the splines of the box match the splines of the clutch plate, because they do so from the factory.

So as long as you use a clutch plate that is smaller than the original Subaru version ans had the same amount of splines as the original VW plates, you are good to go.

I am using the original pressure plate of Subaru, so no issues mating it to the flywheel.

And it's a long time since it looked anything like this!

So I can run the 228mm Vanagon flywheel and use the 220mm Type 1 pressure plate/clutch combo in a Type 1 trans help
