|
|
I'll start by saying i don't know a great deal regarding the internals of an engine( ok , nothing at all) but i think i may have found out why my engine stopped...
You cant really see but the belt has lost 6 teeth, could this have caused the timing to go way out? would i get away with just getting a new belt? or is it going to need to be stripped down ?...

Yes your timing could be out
Your valves may have been bashed by the piston ( I hope they haven't)
Finger's crossed a new belt will cure it. Just whip it off and follow the procedure for replacing it
Question is: Why did it strip the belt? Was it an auto engine and you were being a bit heavy on the gearchanges/throttle or just an old belt? _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

A belt change was on the list of 'things to do' before it stopped
I got the engine off ebay with no history or mileage ( i did get the whole package for £150, so i should have known better )..
I'd been taking it easy, we were heading to the south of France and only got as far as the Dartford bridge when a guy flagged me down as we were losing a lot of oil ( oil cooler hose had split). Fixed that just pulled out on the other side of the toll there was a little pop and it died. Tried turning it over a few times and it just sounded like it was low on compression.. _________________ '76 bay going superfly TDI |

If that's an EJ22 you're safe, they have no valve/piston interferance. |

It's an EJ20 turbo...
Think im going get a cheap belt just to see if it ok, if it is then get a full kit, if not think it's probably going to be cheaper just to get a new lump.. _________________ '76 bay going superfly TDI |

You're right. Didn't think of that. But wait, the 22B was EJ22 DOHC!
I doubt anyone will spend the money though...
As far as I know all EJ's are non-interfering. I think the valves can collide, but not with the piston. |

Was checking the interference to see how safe I would be with my single cam in case of a snapped belt.
SOHC's don't interfere, DOHC's do. _________________ Greetings from Sietze

Whip the belt of and remove your valve covers. You should have a little movement on each of the pulleys (camshafts). You will have to turn each of them to line up the timing marks anyway. Will be obvious if anything has impacted. Don't buy a cheap belt as it will most likely go the same way as your current one very fast. Get a good quality one and if the engine is fooked keep hold of it to put on your next one. I am on my 2nd motor after doing est 160k on last one. Got the latest one with 67k on clock for £450 of ebay! Motor only as already had wiring/ecu. Fingers crossed will be ok these engines are pretty bulletproof. _________________ 89 Crew Cab (Subaru 2.5na)

Sadly no.
All the DOHC engines are interference and the only SOHC engines that are non interference are the ones before 96 or 97.
After that even the SOHC are interference, but the saving grace is that 9 times out of 10 just the valves bend, no piston damage occurs so its a relatively easy heads off fix, not a full tear down. _________________ 1974 1303 Germanlook Suba-Beetle
