OK today I was thinking about a V5 for my beetle, this does happen alot where I will have an engine, think I need a V8, then a VR6, then something else, then work out I have my limitations and then end up back where I started with the idea of using my 2litre 2E golf engine.
However I sat and had a bit more of a think while watching American hotrod (really bad for my idea process as I start back at a V8!) and was thinking actually a V5 from (or VR5 depending on how you look at it) might be the ticket to a sweet sounding engine thats not a 4 banger and might actually fit.
From what I can see from engine blocks I have seen on the internet, it is essentially a VR6 with a piston lopped off, is this the case or totally redesigned?
I need to try and find someone with a V5 engine to measure the block, but it looks a fair bit shorter than a VR6 and almost looks as if it could be a bit shorter than a 4pot 2E?
I know there are 2 varieties of the 5pot a 150bhp and 170bhp, question is what makes that difference in power? is it mechanical like compression ratio or merely the way its been mapped? I was thinking if its just mapping that wouldnt be a problem any way as I think I'd look at something like megasquirt for this to eliminate the need for all the immobiliser and stuff, then give me maybe more scope for tuning.
Going down the fitment route, the next thing that I am concious of is an adaptor plate.
I did wonder how different the stud pattern is between the I4 & VR6 (eg can some of the stud pattern be utilised) and is the V5 the identical pattern to the VR6?
I know my biggest issue is going to be cost with the idea of this engine, but I sat and thought by the time I rebuild my golf engine is going to be an easy 100 quid in gaskets and bits, then theres going to be a cam to get my power, exhaust downpipes etc and before I know it its going to have cost 300-400 quid to get the engine built, plus some more beans to have a new chip mapped for the digifant system and before you know it I have spent as much as a V5+MS system which is a minimum of 10bhp clear of a hot 2litre out the stable and potentially 30bhp, or more with ease!
Most importantly they sound cool _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!
