Hi

I`m still trying to get my bay window to alfa engine conversion back on the road and almost there>

Have just changed gearbox shaft seal and clutch and in doing this noticed that the bush in the flywheel is worn- the one that holds the gearbox shaft in line.

As far as I can see it`s a brass bush rather than needle bearing. I think the flywheel is a reworked beetle one but am not sure as the central fixings are as alfa.

the gearbox and shaft is a standard beetle one.

so I`m not sure where to get a replacement and what size to look for-as it could be that the outer dimensions are to fit in the end of the alfa crank/flywheel and the inner to fit the vw shaft

also would i just pull this bush out or do i have to take the flyweel off to get it.

here`s some photos- any help or advice would be appreciated!!!

Hi

I fitted a WBX motor to a bug years ago. I used the bearing out of a stock Beetle gland nut and had the flywheel centre turned out so that it was a press fit into it. I bought a new bearing rather than trying to remove the old one.

If the hole is already too big in the flywheel try going to bearing supply company, they may have one with the correct ID and OD that suits your flywheel or get a sleeve made up for the VW bearing, have it made so that its a press it into your flywheel.

You can usually get the old bush out by filling the area up with grease and and then using an appropriate sized drift tap it into the hole, the grease will force the old bush out.

Or find a suitable size tap and wind it into the bush, then when the tap bottoms out it will wind the bushing out, I do a similar thing on starter motor bushes

I've been advised to use a bush not a bearing. I used a bearing originaly in my ford engine conversion and I found it to have disintergrated when I changed my gearbox 1 year later. So pete at Cogbox machined me up a bush when I had my gear box done and its been as sweet as a nut ever since!

Hope that helps?

cheers for that Alex

I think I will go for a bush as you say. Can`t get the old one out yet but will have another go tomorrow- someone recommended wet toilet paper instead of grease to drift it out so will try that!!
