|
|
Hi there,
I'm a little confused in chosing the right gearbox.
Made up my mind about 4 or 5 speed which is gonna be 4 speed.
But then, engine is a n/a EJ20 DOHC with probably, a stand alone ECU from KdFi.
My bus is a Split from Brazil made in '69, dropped rear with Porsche IRS, frontbeam from Harry harpics, adjustable and 4" smaller.
Porsche brakes front and rear.
Engine will be tweaked with a turbo.
Almost forgot, it's gonna be a daily driver
What is the most safe and durable solution?
T1 box with a rhino casing, T2 box?
Every opinion is welcome.
Thanks in advance _________________ convertin' a VW T2 t1 '69 15 window "splitty" into a daily driver, to be continued....... |

Probably i would go for the RJES bellhousing and a 091 box because you've got a splitty. You can use subaru's clutch + sub starter + bus clutch disc. If you'd like to stick with a beetle box I would fit super diff and HD side covers, kennedy adapter + pressure plate + clutch disc, hd rhino gearbox mounts intermediate, but this set is probably more expensive. It all depends how you want to drive it. 091 box is the strongest you can get for reasonable money (IRS set up required). I'm putting a 2.0l non turbo impreza engine into my bug. First I wanted to go the RJES way but changed my mind because of the fabrication work that's needed to fit a 091 or 002 box in a beetle. Now I'm fitting a 1303s AT IRS box with kennedy kits and super diff + rest because it's easier for me, I can buy all parts without fabricating anything. _________________ Calm Bug |

it's the same amount of work to fit a 091 in a split van as it is in a bug as the original van transmission is type1 swing axle based. to fit the 091 in my split van i had to tunnel the cargo floor to allow for higher position of the shift rod on the nose cone with a custom gear linkage and nose mount the frame horns also have to be removed to allow for the extra girth of the box, something to take in to account as well is the fact that the 2.0 litre bay 091 is lower geared than the more popular irs beetle box _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

by the way you can buy a of the shelf 091 to type1 gearbox intermediate/bearing carrier plate from cb performance so a 091 box will bolt straight into a bug or split using original front mount/nose cone/shift rod etc its not cheap but makes mounting a 091 box easy and it supposed to make the box even stonger than stock!!!! _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

Thanks for the info,
Got PM's from you as well "13 window"
Plan is to go with the Bellhousing and crossover inputshaft from Rjes.
Only need to find funds
If the funding is solved perhaps;
http://www.cableshift.com/home.html
Anything on ratios from the 091, meaning which box i should leave alone and which one is the best?
Cheers,

If you want to go for a non turbo engine I have a new RJES bellhousing for sale. I was going to use it in my bug. It's painted black but was never used just fitted to a 002 box for measurement. Let me know if you were interested, some picts here:

I don't even have a 091 6 rib yet, perhaps you know a unit for sale? _________________ convertin' a VW T2 t1 '69 15 window "splitty" into a daily driver, to be continued....... |

That's ok, just thought that you might be interested
I've got 2x 002 gearbox but they're not as strong as a 091 one. I know someone who's got a few of them but it's not in the UK. Can ask him for how much he'd sell one of his if you want.

It is a lot of work and it's not cheap if you can't do it by yourself and this is the reason why I've decided to get a beetle box instead of a bus one. I was lucky because one of my mates had for sale a 1303S AT box. I've also bought a super diff, HD side plates and some bits to make it stronger and I'm hoping it's gonna be ok for a 125bhp engine _________________ Calm Bug |

It will be fine, even without those parts depending on how you drive it.
You only need one HD side plate unless you want the box to look symettrical - the diff is only trying to pop out of one side. However if it is a late single side cover gearbox then the standard VW sideplate with the ring cast in is better than the aftermarket ones.
I have 173hp and haven't damaged a completely standard AT box even though I have given it a lot of abuse with over 20k miles. I did knacker the diff on a type 3 DC code twin side cover box before that though.
I personally wouldn't bother fitting any bay box to a split. Not only are they low geared, you have to hack out all the gearbox carrier and then strengthen the rear part of the chassis rails as they aren't strong enough to hang the gearbox and engine from. |

you should be ok with that amount of torque from a non turbo scooby motor its the torque that kills them and the lower its made the worse it is! my tdi split blew a cogbox built strengthened single sideplate type1 box in 4k miles and it's only a 90bhp model! but it comes on boost from 1500rpm and it makes max torque at 1900rpm
the bus box is much lower geared and alot of work to fit to a split if you dont need it! in my bus i would say after speaking to people from all over europe who have had experiance in transaxle building and braking it was the only way to go with my motor _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,
