I cant decide where would be best to put my fuel tank return on my splitty tank. I'm currently looking at the bottom back corner as low as possible.

on my split (with vw tdi motor) i drilled the top of the tank to the side of the fuel gauge sender (so i could get to the inside of the fitting to fit a o ring seal ) i know its a bit different subaru i.e. the return flow is higher on a injection petrol engine but it should still work ok

There's also that vw part thingy that Gerrelt posted up on here. Think it's from a golf.

Hmm, not sure about that, I think I would rather braze a return on but unsure whether to put is above or in the bottom.

in my opinion i would say a return back to the tank is better than a external swirl pot for lower fuel temps and a return to the top (preferably in to a internal swirl pot) is better as there is no restriction from fuel dropping into the tank

With my return-to-pot external swirl pot system i do definitely get some cavitation issues, and it's setup the way it 'should' be with the return coming out the top and to the tank. The reason i went with the return into the swirl pot is i knew the lift pump had no chance of keeping up with the injection pump if the return went right into the gas tank.

I might fashion a fuel cooler for next summer, probably a shortened heater matrix with a fan to blow off some of the heat.

If you drive like a nanna in a cool to moderate climate you could just get away with no surge tank and the return into the tank

but if you like a bit of spirited driving or live in a warmer climate and use an external pump you really need a surge tank

Ive been in a mates WRX bug a few times with no surge tank and its painfull listening to the pump constantly cavitating
EFI pumps like to be either submerged in fuel (intake style) or be slightly pressure fed (surgetank)

I run my return into the filler neck, over a year and 7000kms later works sweet as except on really long runs on hot days my pump gets abit noisy.
thats the surgetanks design problem though, the return is next to the supply so it recirculates bad.
Got a new one made up ready to go in with the return going into the top instead

Well I just cheated with my swirl pot design by using a fuel injection tank. I have a 12mm OD fuel supply to the injection pump, I have an 6 or 8mm fuel return at the bottom of the tank, originally these where next to one another however I overcame this by extending the it's location to the top corner of the tank with a small pipe.

The type three tank had an internal swirl pot which is handy. No idea how my set up performs on the road yet.

But thinking about it I cut my tank open (much to my annoyance), my point is that if I was to do it again then I'd happly cut it open again and improve the intervals to the tanks ie bigger internal swirl pot maybe some tank baffles. Your could even get hold of a type three tank and weld in the bottom part ( with the internal switl pot) of it to any steel tank. Quick easy internal swirl pot then with the necessarily sized fuel line in and out.

Ok, would a "T" piece in the fuel line work then?
