My girlfriend and I have spent the last year or so on and off, fitting around work and uni, converting our 1977 bay window camper to scooby power.

We got hold of an ej20 engine and adaptor plate and fly wheel and got to work. As lots of you know getting the engine in and doing a bit of fabrication to make an engine support bars and things is not that difficult, if you have a welder and a grinder. The hard part came when fitting the rad. we wanted to keep it as stock looking as possible so put the rad under the floor.

We started off with a Jaguar rad like many others have used, we struggled getting air out of the system with this set up. Also the frame work i made up to hold the rad in place was so heavy it was ridiculous.

While looking in to some thing else I was looking at buying some aluminium and found it was a lot cheaper than what i had thought. So I decided to make up a new frame using aluminium and got hold of an aluminium after market motorsport rad and made up a totally enclosed box. I constructed the frame from 20mm box section, I don't have a tig welder so made up brackets to hold it all together from 3mm aluminium plate. The rad made up the base of the box and clad it all in 2mm sheet. I also have 2 12"fans that are still controlled by the ecu.

I have a flap on the front that at some point will be controlled by the redundant heat exchanger cables which i had thought of a while ago but when I saw andewilson cut out his front cross member I thought that was genius, so that’s now part of the plan too.

To overcome the airlock problem I have a temperature sensor housing on each pipe to and from the radiator. these have small pipe take offs that are connected up to the expansion bottle.

Went to fan fst a few weeks back and was able to get a much needed rjes as they were out of stock when i first needed it, we have also picked up a 091 2 litre gearbox too. So thats the job for this weekend.

that looks really neat! If I ever get round to redoing my rad design I'd certainly look at a more thoughtfully engineered solution like that.

Mine's completely overkill (3mm steel L surrounding the rad) and very heavy. Plus side is that it takes chunks out of the rare speed bump that it hits rather than buckling! but the main reason I'd re do it is that I've positioned the rad so the warm air's exiting into the floor. a bit of a school boy error. It seems to be o.k until it's going at 60+ and then it's fan reliant, no sign of overheating at 75 on a cruise but the fans are cycling
