just wondering if anyone has any ideas, put Subaru 94 2.2 in the bay, was overjoyed to finally get it wired up (that was a mission) and running it idles ok but as soon as I give it some throttle it either cuts out completely or backfires then cuts out
I have checked the fuel pressure and that is fine, i think the timing should be set fine, all the breather pipes are connected up. Has anyone got any ideas on where to start trying to figure out the problem

Check your plugs. Sounds like a timing problem - but that's up to the ECU. You're not in control

Sounds pretty obvious but it happened to me, salty spray got into one - parked on a cliff

Have you checked the fault codes?

As per elusive stranger check your fault codes first. They are by far the best way to diagnose any fault you have.

I remember when i fitted mine for the first time i had similar problems. I assume as per all Subaru conversions i am aware of you have the original transmitter and key. I had this problem of cutting out when the key was not exactly placed by the transmitter. Engine would run but not physically drive.

I have also witnessed this when not having a speed sensor fitted. Used to read code 33. For whatever reason this problem stopped happening and i have had 2 years of trouble free driving. I still have code 33 now and then but not the actual problem.

This sounds more like what you are experiencing:
Other possibility i experienced recently similar to this is a faulty knock sensor. Engine will idle but as soon as you blip the throttle it pops and bangs or cuts out all together. I can only put mine down to damaged wiring. As the knock sensor wiring has to be aluminium sheaved to stop interference. Not realising this i cut out and replaced with normal wire resulting in code 22 and the problem you explain above. I managed to solve mine by shortening wire back so it was shorter than original but would still plug in. If it is the knock sensor it self these are easy and relatively cheap to replace but check it is faulty and not actually picking up a fault within the engine.

Word of advise: Check and check again everything is plug in and where it should be. This has caught me out so many times. Check!

Thinking moreso...

Check your throttle position sensor

Following up from Griff's post
Immob, if you have one, will only allow your engine to run for about 2-3 seconds - then it dies
I have no experience about the knock sensor - Griff maybe spot on here.

I fear that GDR isn't going to post back though

Just a thought..

Coolant sensor might be telling the ECU that it's hot/cold, so it compensates on the fuel mixture.

I'd imagine if it thought the engine was warm, it would lean the mixture out. You blipping the throttle might make it far too lean.
