|
|
Ok so my van has come up for insurance renewal and I have decided I should try shopping around a bit, but not sure where is best to start.
I have a TD golf powered 72 baywindow van and currently I insure with HIC.
HIC insure my van as a golf CL 1.6td then change the title to 'baywindow camper' which I am sure is fine but my premium went up from about £117 to more like £245 and I dont think the TD engine should really make that much difference as 20bhp extra isnt that much, but its because its being technically insured as a golf.
So who do you insure with? whats your vehicle and how much do you roughly pay?
I just think for the amount I use my van so far its not paying for its self and just more expensive to run than when it was a petrol A/C motor because of the conversion cost and the increased insurance.
I'm sure someone else is probably cheaper, as my new golf was about half price else where compared with HIC! _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

Ummmm I got told that if you bung in a VW engine they insure you as a "modified VW engine"
Scoobies etc are a different kettle of fish, that's when they insure you as a Scooby (or whatever) then apply a discount as it's in a 'classic'
I'm with HIC, try Jardine Faber _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

being as its a VW engine and only 20bhp more than original I would have expected to just pay a bit extra as a performance increase rather than different vehicle type.
I may have to have a chat with them! _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!

Our van is insured with Adrian flux this year because they were the cheapest and one of the few available to insure younger people! Might try other companys once were both over 19.
Only about £600 for me and misses on a 72 bay and 1.9TD from a golf CL like yours was.
So about £200 isnt all that bad
the quote we got for the original 1.6 petrol engine was pretty similar to the one with the new engine, think they just add a percentage for the modification. TBH didnt ask too many questions because it was £1000 odd last year... |

hic have tried ripping me of twice they give you there best quote at £??? then you ring round find the same cover at say £50 cheaper ring them back they match it straight away if they could do it at that why didnt they do it in the first place? they've done it twice once with my mk2 gti (modified tdi motor fitted) and last year with my almost stock 2.5tdi t4 velle to the tune of £150
i'm with footman james with all my motors and i asked them how they worked out the price for the split insurance and they take the price of a stock van and times it by the percentage of the power upgrade. i.e. stock 1500 split 45bhp/ 1900tdi split 90bhp=double original power double stock insurance premium. still worked out at less that £200 for year unlimited mileage, fully comp etc _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

Well I have had a chat with them now so I am going to have a shop round, they insure my van based on the insurance grouping the vehicle the engine came from was, in this case a golf CL 1.6TD - group 17! and I was thinking thats a bit high, so then i asked to see if a T25 1.6TD was any different, apparently not. To start with they said they couldnt change the vehicle until I pointed out the engines are exactly the same (in girl at an insurance company whos clueless terms) and then she was magically able to check when i said its ok i'll fit the van engine tomorrow then however T25 still seemed to be the same price! at least that cleared that up!
The first time I insured it with the N/A diesel I had they just insured it as normal and changed the fuel type! (same bhp) with the new TD its probably about 18bhp more than 'stock' (think its a 68bhp td) so I though it should be insured likewise!
Now to start ringing round! _________________ Second Gear All The Way Baby!
