|
|
The turbo mounted on my TDI has a lot of play, both radial and axial. But AFAIK it doesn't leak oil. We're talking aaaaa lot of play, didn't measure exactly, but we're talking millimetres...
I have another one, I'll think I'll switch to that one instead. It's a uge diffence between them.
Has anyone checked a used turbo to see how much play it can be without leaking? |

Nice going mate. I had a looksee at your blog from work this afternoon.

Nice work on the rebuild!
I thought about doing this for my TD turbo but it only leaks a bit of oil and has hardly any play in it.
How hard did you find getting the turbo apart with rusty bolts etc?
When i read into this before some people say the turbo needs rebalanced? Or have i got the worng idea |

The bolts gets loose really easy, even though the exhaust side is rusty the bolts are the easy deal. The only trouble is to get the exhaust housing of, there's definitely a need for some brute force.
These turbo's doesn't rotate with super high RPM and when it comes to a GT15 the compressor wheel is only pressed onto the shaft without splines etc. The shaft and the exhaust wheel are still fixed to each other though. We haven't done any balancing on any turbo that me or my friends have rebuilt. The other guys uses bigger turbines than me and they mark up the position for the turbines before the turbo is disassembled.
On the other hand, one of my friends got a damaged turbine blade on the compressor. He cut of the same amount of metal from the opposite side and put it back in the car again. Happily pushing 1.2 bar afterwards. |
