|
|
Every now and then the coolant hose from my engine ej25 to plastic pipes on the T3 decides it wants to throw itself off and dump antifreeze/water all over the road. Now if it was a one off i would think nothing was wrong other than the clamp had come loose. However 3 times since xmas is a bit suspicious especailly as i had put what seemed to be a heavy duty clamp on it. Plus as i have covered mega mileage without this happening previously i am begining to think there is a problem.
No gunk in oil and temp fine until the the pipe comes loose. I have had numerous cooling issues last 2 months.
Any ideas anyone?
Anyone know where i can get some more heavy duty hose clamps (crimp type?) and crimp tool. Tried ebay and net but clamp size only seems to go up to 28mm.
Thanks |

is it straight pipe over straight pipe? or does it have the raised ring to fix behind? _________________ vwdrc class rep

| Straight rubber hose (50-60mm) on to standard straight plastic pipe (transporter pipes) |

If the pipe is tight and blowing off under pressure I would have the system checked for head gasket failure. Most engine workshops would be able to check for you using a coloured liquid which changes colour in the presence of exhaust gasses.
I had an EJ22 which was doing exactly as you describe (in original car), the test confirmed a head gasket leak, leaking exhaust gas into the coolant system and pressurising it until either the rad cap blew off pressure, or a hose blew off.
If you don't want to pay someone else to do the test, frost automotive sell the kit so you can test it yourself.
here is the kit.....

Is that just a one shot test ?
Or can you get a few tests with one kit? _________________ 1988 T25 EJ25 n/a.. it just makes more sense that way.. |

| Not sure how much fluid you use for a test but it seems you can buy more fluid for £9.50 a bottle |

Has your coolant got a slight scum on it?
If you remove the header cap has it got a tan coloured crust on the threads, feels like very fine sand when dry?
My gaskets went, none of the emulsion in the oil symptoms - just the ones above.
If I removed the cap it was like permanently bleeding the system, just little bubbles every so often.
My local VeeDub main dealers tried with a sniffer, it wasn't very successful.

is the steel reinforcer inside the nylon pipe still ok? they are prone to falling out or rotting away allowing the nylon pipe to compress a little bit allowing the rubber hose blow off _________________ 1964 rat 13 window deluxe 1Z tdi,

Thanks for the advice.
I am going to try a further time as it appears there was an end cap from the plastic pipe wedged along the rubber hose. I have reattached using a very strong epoxy adhesive so hopefully it should stay in place. I noticed thai actually has a slight lip to it that may stop the pipe coming off. I however am slightly suspicious of a leak in the head gasket as i do have symptons mentioned above.
I shall keep you posted.
Out of interest is there any recomendations for companies used to replace a head gasket on a subaru engine in a vw transporter. I am not a novice but i am currently without a garage or suitable place to work on it. I possibly could strip and drop the long block off reducing the price. Any ideas on price?
Thanks

Do it yourself mate.
I managed to remove both heads in-situ in my '78. Had to take the heads off with 1 bolt still in on each side.
Forgot to re-assemble that way the first time - not enough clearance to put the bolt in when the head's in place, d'oh
I think you'll have much more room
If you haven't done it before... 5 hours and you'll have it done
Do a quick search on here.
Remove alt, inlet manifold, water manifold, exhaust, cambelt, plugs, heads (14mm 12 pointed socket). You don't have to remove the rocker covers
Assembly's the reverse. _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.
