Hi guys,

Has anybody considddered using the WRX front transmition complete and rotating the diff 180 degrees in the casing, or has this been attempted and isn't easily achieved.

Apologies if this is an area that has already been covered, I've tried searching and come up with nothing...

It a known fact that it's not possible to flip the Subaru gearbox. If you want to use a Scooby box, you better go for mid mount.

Thanks for the reply Sven.

I was worrieg that my 002 'box wasn't going to be man enough. Defo don't want to cut the bus up too much, so I'd rather not go the mid-mounting route.

Doesn't seem to be much info on the 002 'box available, 091 is obviously the item of choice, perhaps just go with what I've got until it gives out in a pile of grease, cogs and oil! Grin

Actually, it's now possible to flip a Subaru diff and use it instead of a VW transaxle. I've had the Subaru crownwheel and pinion reverse-engineered so they rotate the other way. This can be used in the 2wd and 4wd 4 bolt and 8 bolt 5 speed transmissions. 2wd boxes will require the use of a locking shaft to lock the gearbox output shaft to the pinion shaft (or weld them together or weld up the centre diff).

Unfortunately it's an expensive solution - US$5,000 for a 41 tooth crownwheel and 11 tooth pinion, but it's custom forged and machined and the quality is exactly the same as the original item. I have sets for sale if anyone needs one.

Pix below show Subaru items next to reverse-cut items

On our side of the pond, for $5000 you get a rebuilt box with a bellhousing for a Subaru. And money left.

But I like your idea! Happy

Hey Sven, do you get a 5 speed box with virtually any number of gear ratios and modern, quiet, rugged design for $5k? And can you get it in 4wd with a nice compact centre differential built in?

I wish it would cost less than that so it could be a viable alternative but frankly, I did it because it was there to be done. Over time as more people build them we can likely get the cost down.

STIdub I don't know anyone that works for the railways. My Manx is still being put together. It's got the engine and transaxle in it, the rear Subaru diff in the front of the pan (upside down) and the Subaru front hubs adapted to the VW suspension. Basically needs the tailshaft and gearshift mechanism done and the CV/s and axles cut to length. Then I'll start putting everything together for a drive and proof of concept.

Only 4wd Manx I've heard of is some guy in the USA put a dana live axle in the front of one but this chap has now passed away and there's no info on the buggy.

Yes. A Vege-box costs less than $2000, and if I let a Swedish tuning firm rebuild a Syncro-box it would be around the same money.
Modern? Well, rebuilt or not, a gearbox is just a gearbox. Been the same since the 50's... Wink

I think you should have a talk with the company that did the items for you. First of all I think it's possible to sell them so make a batch of ten and split the money. Secondly I think you paid pretty much, in a logical sense you made only one, but for sure they should make a better price if there is a batch.
As I said, I like your idea. Happy

Yeah I'll make 10 sets.....I've got a lazy $50,000 US just laying around...
The only other quotation I could get in the whole world was from a U.S. company and it was $12,500 for 1 set!! Spiral bevel gears are expensive.

You're right of course, the price would come down if I made a batch but even at USD$2,500 ea I doubt if I would sell any, maybe to some motorsport buggy racers or something...VW enthusiasts seem to be very very price conscious. Unfortunately I don't have the resources to buy a batch of them, I'm just a guy building a 4wd Manx. Happy

Maybe if someone buys this set off me I can put together a deposit for a batch of 5 and pay the gear maker as I sell them.

like the idea Ttreibler!
tbh The price seems a lot initially but I reckon if I add up the cost of my modified 091, plus the RJES adaptor, box purchase etc etc its not far off what you paid.

Since you seem to know your subaru boxes - how hard is it to convert the subaru box to 2wd and which is the best way? Is there a step by step guide anywhere your aware of? its for another project which im just thinking about atm.

EDIT: just seen your answer to my other thread so please ignore my questions! cheers
