i have a ej22 in my bay which is all running great.
i have a rjes bellhousing and engine mount etc.
how much work do you think to put a scooby turbo in??
not even sure what engine to use but i was just getting a bit bored and fancied another project.

Turbo into a bay isn't easy because of the proximity of the (potentially red hot) turbo to the petrol tank. Any petro leak in the tank area, and your bus will almost certainly catch fire. Therefore either the tank or the turbo needs to be moved. The neatest job is definitely to move the turbo closer to the LH rear corner, which minimises the mods to the bus, and gets it well out of the way of the petrol tank. You also have to relocate the intercooler, and make it work efficiently. Near impossible with an air to air intercooler, but the air to water ones from early Legacy turbos can be mounted anywhere, with a small radiator fitted elsewhere to get rid of the heat.
You can upgrade your existing bell housing kit for use with a pull to release clutch, as used in all Subaru turbo's easliy. However, this will also require a hydraulic clutch conversion. The only other option would be to use some sort of heavy duty push to release Subaru clutch, as all turebo's are considerably higher powered than anything that Subaru ever fitted a push to release clutch into. The chioce largely depends on how many bhp you want to go far and how you intend to drive it.

thats useful because i was thinking about doing the same next year, when we spoke at bugjam a year or so ago rich you were running a reversed manifold on your ej25. Could something like that work? and in response to a intercooler, one mounted in the rear tail gate or under the van with a scoop you dont think will be efficient enough? so it would be better to go down the chargecooler route?

Also as far as wiring goes will a new loam be needed?

regards

Efficient intercooling is the closest thing you'll ever find to free bhp, so putting a bit of effort in to get it to work properly is worthwhile in my opinion. Why go to the trouble of fitting a turbo to have it continuouly running with the ignition retarded to avoid detonation caused by the boost temperature being too high because of a compromised intercooler?

I don't think you'll ever get enough cold air through a rear mounted air to air intercooler for it to work as well as it did in the front of a Subaru. If you move one to where there is lots of airflow, you'll get a boost loss from the long pipes. If you have 2 pressure and 2 temperature gauges, the efficiency of an intercooler system is easy to measure.

Throttle body reverser MY90 - MY99, reversed inlet manifold MY00 --> for bays. Both of these options also (coincidentally) suit the most sensible option for not having the turbo too cose to the petrol tank too - moving the turbo to behind the engine.
