Hello
Great site this, its been a great help, so thanks for that
I've just finished installing an ej22 in my T3 Mulitvan, using RJES products, must also say thanks to Richard for his help I've Had a bit of a hoo haa! The 1st engine had a blown head gasket, so out it came, luckily I managed to get another engine for next to nothing so have popped that one in now. Its all good apart from a couple of issue's:
No.1, it is idling at appx 1000rpm when warm, also the idle comes down very slowly from about 1300rpm when coming to a halt. I've checked for vacuum leaks and found that the vacuum pipe off the fuel pressure regulator had a small split, so replaced that, this helped a little, also had the inlet off, resealed it and new gaskets. I've cleaned the iacv and tried another iacv. It's running like a dream with no fault codes, but still idling high The previous engine with the dodgy head gasket idled at 600-700rpm when up to temp. I'm using the inlet loom & ecu etc.. off the 1st engine.
No.2 The power steering is not working properly. I had some new full length flexible hoses made up to replace the corroded VW ones, from cold the powersteering works, after a short blast at speed I lose the power steering, assuming when the fuild gets up to temp. The original VW pipes have one with a larger diameter, my new pipes both have the same diameter like the original subaru pipes. I haven't tried another pump yet. I'm thinking probably the wrong size pipes

Can only attempt to answer the first Q.
Were the engines the same, as in exactly? ECU's and engines are generally not swapable.
If your orig was made on a Monday & the replacement made on a Wed, well you get my drift!

Problem 1, Got to agree with ES If the motors are from different cars then problems arise. If one is from an auto and the other out of a manual this can cause problems. Try changing over the injectors and see if that helps.
Problem 2, I made my feed and return pipes the same diameter and had no problems but am using a renault rack.
System should self bleed and I did notice the fluid level reduced a fair bit after the first couple of runs so keep an eye on it.

Thanks for the reply's, it is a later engine, 95/96 which ran the 3 plug ecu, so unfortuatley can't try that ecu as my rjes converted loom is the 4 plug type.
The throttle body is closing properly.
As I've got 2 IACV valves now I thought about adjusting one of those? _________________ 1989 VW Magnum Multivan EZ30

there's your answer

They don't need adjusting from what I've gleaned. They adjust themselves via the ECU
You might have a dodgy ECU temp sensor but I really think it's because you changed engines.
HG's aren't difficult to do believe it or not _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

Well I've had a fiddle with the IACV and it's idleing at appx 750-800rpm now, so i'll run it like that for a bit and see how it behaves.
No faults on the CEL yet so assuming the temp sensor's OK.
I may pull the other engine apart and see what the damage is, I think it had been gone for some time, as one of the spark plugs was well corroded into the head, and really didn't want to come out! It just didn't twig at the time that the HG may have gone. Thought that was a quad cam thing
So I may end up fixing it and putting it back in, I'm getting good at swapping these engines now
On the plus side this later engine pulls better has less mileage. _________________ 1989 VW Magnum Multivan EZ30

Hello James,
Leave the iacv adjuatment alone. Ther eis no procedure for resetting them, as they were supplied preset. By adjusting them, all yo do is alter the balamve of high and low adjustment which is available to the ECU. There may be different types for different engines.
An obvious possibility is that someone has adjusted the throttle stop screw in the past. Again, thses should never need adjusting on an injected engine, but people who are used to carbs have a tendency to adjust them. Set it so the throttle is as close as possible to being fully closed without jamming, and see is this improves your idle speed. The engine should be drawing all it's air through the iacv at idle. _________________ Regards,

Hi Richard,
I have 2 IACV's one if which is still factory set, they both have the same part no, so i can swap back if needed.
Since I adjusted the IACV, I've had no problems, everything seems fine, the idle is very steady, and it behaves as you would expect from cold. What are your thoughts on the early 4 plug ecu management system combined with a later engine, could this be the cause ?
I'll have a look at the throttle stop screw but am loathed to adjust it, as it was idling fine on the first engine, I'm assuming it's OK.
I did consider using the throttle body from the later engine or maybe even the complete inlet, as they are slightly different.
Cheers

Sorry - I forgot you'd swapped the entitre inlet manifold assembly from the old engine. I have no idea what the effects of mixing and matching engines and engine management systems are I'm afraid. I know no way of telling whether the cam profiles and the compression ratio's are the same. _________________ Regards,
