TDI into a 74 bay

I've read lots of stuff elsewhere - haven't found too much on here - is it within a mere mortals ability to convert a T2 running 1700 T4 injun and box to run on TDI?

I'm thinking of getting the 1.9 lump out of an L plate passat if its easy enough to do. I've read on here and it seems that the major limiting factor is the 'box, clutch and engine mounts - is this right? Where does the rad get mounted etc etc.

Any help and pointers much appreciated

hi joker....

ref the actual conversion I cant help much im afraid but I can answer a few questions.....

engine mounts arent a problem...with any alternaitve engine youll need to fabircate mounts...a mate of mine has a GTI engine (which may have similar block??) his is mounted on a ladder frame across between the chassis.

for cooling see the kooling section and this is an archive of all cooling variations weve found on the web so far....take your pick!!!

by the box - i presume your referring to ratios...the 2ltr 091 code bay box is your best bet as it not only offers slightly imporved ratios cog box can also upgrade it with a new 4th gear which will gain you about 9-12mph and drop revs by 900-1000rpm - but its expensive. To bolt up to the TDi engine it might (can anyone confirm?) be possible to use the t25 diesel bell housing.

thanks Rich - i'm not looking for supercar performance (obviously) just fuel economy really - I drive a Honda Accord which returns 54 to the gallon, even with my heavy right foot, so it sticks in the throat a bit when i'm only doing 50 in the van and getting around 20 mpg !! If I could get somewhere in the middle of the 2 i'd be well happy.

I've seen some of the radiator pics - the 1.8 ford diesel looks best as it doesn't affect the look of the van

I would suggest that you definatly put a front rad in under the floor some were, I run just two rads in the back (golf rads) in my 72 pannel van on scoops and it is fine but it does sail a bit close to the wind at the moment on the temperature side of things so I'm gonna add a third rad in up front inbetween the chassis rails as it has been proven to be one of the more effective places to put a rad-then I will probably be abit over kill on cooling but I cant see that as a bad thing!

out of interest how does your van do in this heat?

I havent had a problem in the heat at all. Apart from taking all my window winder handles off and not being able to open the windows!!!!!!! I've put em back on now-foolish.

The heat hasn't made any differance to my running temperature which is strange. I guess it is because the air circulating around my rads is always well hot because it comes past the exhaust manifold and engine block.

My battery went flat the other day so my fans stopped working and I did over heat-so that just shows the importance of not making your system too heavily dependant on fans-I like jerrys idea of a mechanical fan some were. Oh you should go and see him when ya in portsmouth-he runs SE tyers in Cosham-check his buss out-very big engine!!

Anyways back to rads-ever since i fitted my 2L box I havent had any problems-but paranoya is making me fit another rad up front as this is definatly the best plase to put one.
