i finally managed to get to try and start my subaru engine today - its a 98 with immobliser.

first time on the key and it started - but then only ran for about 5 seconds. at that point i noticed i had a water leak from the coolant manifold so i took all the wiring and inlet manifold off to get at and discovered that the rubber o ring had split.

i then put everything back together again so i could see if i could sort out the short running issue - now it won`t start at all!

i`ve got fuel there and i`m 90% sure i`ve connected everything back to where it is - i checked the error codes and i`m getting 13 which i believe is the camshaft position sensor? searched on the net and apparantly its the plug on the front right of the engine - thats all plugged in and good so i`m at a bit of a loss...

any ideas on thisone?

thanks mike

i had the plugs the wrong way round - the sensor was on one of the injection plugs by mistake - doh!

i`ve still got the starting problem though where it just runs for a few seconds then cuts out - i couldn`t keep it going by blipping the throttle when i tried earlier.

Do you seriously mean a few seconds or around 1 second?

it was a few seconds - prob about 4-5 seconds. another guy had the same problem and he said that he blocked of the pipe that goes from the idle control unit (16mm bore) to the induction pipe and that sorted it.

to be honest, i ran it the other night for a few seconds and it didn`t cut out straightaway but i chickened out as it was so loud without an exhuast and turned of the key myself! so not sure if there is problem or not.

i have no charcoal canister on fitted - should all the vacuum outlets be blocked off? thats the one thing i`ve been unsure off since i`ve been trying to get it started.

i`m going on holiday in a couple of days for 3 weeks so have`nt got the time until get back to have a look, but might just try and turn it over tonight and see how long it runs for. i`ll see how long it is before the neighbours run out complaining!

cheers

Don't do this, do it properly! Cors it'll cut out, the IAC needs to be able to pass metered air.
The IAC uses the crankcase breather (which then plugs into the inlet manifold after the MAF)

don`t worry - i didn`t block this one off - its all connected how it should be. the only ones i have blocked of the vacuum points for (i think) the charcoal filter which i don`t have.

is this correct?

i `ve blocked one on the back of the injection (left) , 3 on a unit under the manifold (centre) and one on top of the inlet manifold (right)

Dunno what the one is on the left could you do a close up at some point please?

The one under the manifold (middle arrow) didn't need doing if your not plumbing in the charcoal filter.
The one on the TB is what would have connected to the middle arrow so blocking that's right

Looking like it's almost there Happy

Damn, I wish I'd seen that photo first.
That's exactly where that pipe goes, leave it like that - don't block it off. It's part of the fuel pressure regulator
