The Ford pinto engine is a popular choice. Think these are quite common in Aus.

Covin is doing a CVH 4 pot at the mo and I have a 2.5 duratech V6.
Not 100% that it'll go in, although I have an adapter plate for ford motors - if it fits the plate then I'm going to do the body alterations necessary to physically fit it in. If not then I think I'll be looking for a CVH or Zetec.
IMO with my standard 1600 gear ratios a normally aspirated petrol engine is the only way to go. |

You worry about gear ratios too much
My 1600 box on my Derv was just fine.. be interesting to see if the 2ltr box makes much difference.. I think I'll need to get it cogboxed to get real gains ! but hopefully I'm wrong. _________________ 1971 Devon Bay with 1800 Ford Turbo Diesel Engine (wip)

| It must be my subconsious yearning for more power - making excuses against the diesel! If the V6 goes to pot maybe I'll have a rethink. |

V6 will def be the option, if I wasn't planning on doing 250+ miles a week in my bus I'd rather the smoother option of a petrol. But I wanna use mine as a daily driver so derv it is for me. _________________ 1971 Devon Bay with 1800 Ford Turbo Diesel Engine (wip)

| Mine'll be a daily as well, just hope its not too thirsty!! Still - should be cheap to insure, its tax free and I'll be servicing it myself so it shouldnt be that expensive to run. |

Jerry, we're always interested to see projects etc so get those pictures sorted out soon...
As Steamo said, I'm going to be fitting the Ford 1.8 CVH petrol into my Camper. Well, that's the plan but I keep thinking about V6 Engines for some reason . . . .
However, I must confess one of the best choices of engine if your going to be spending more money is the N/A Subaru lump. They fit well and go well. Richbaker has the Turbo Subaru Engine in his but I'm sure he'll agree with me on this one. With that sort of power and the added comlexities of the Turbo you need to make many other modifications to get things working right which all adds to the cost. But what a result at the end....
With Ref: Gearing. I've got the Ford RS Turbo fitted to my Covin which uses VW Type 3 running gear and 4 speed but after fitting new 17 inch wheels the change in MPG and revs at speed is wonderful. Forget spending loads of money on expensive gearbox upgrades and simply fit nice BIG wheels and you're on a winner. I'm getting close to 80 miles more on a full tank now. _________________ DARREN

JP - thats some big up to the site Jerry bought computer just to have a look! LOL
Covin go for the V6!! Check out ebay there are loads of them on there (or there was last time I looked). My mini is booked in for MOT tommorrow so I will be splitting the engine and box soon and seeing for sure if the adapter fits. I'll post some more encouragment after that if you need it. You've already got the adapter you know it makes sense. (plus from a selfish point of view 2 heads are better than one!) |
