|
|
Hi there,
Acording to Kennedy's a EJ 22 doesn't fit a "Splitty"!
EARLIER VW VANS
The 2.2 Subaru engine does not fit these because the air inlet interferes with the gas tank. Subaru's 1800 cc pushrod '81-'86 engines fit fine as do the Toyota 2TC, 3TC, VW Rabbit, Nissan V6, Mazda rotary, and Porsche 911 because the '68-'79 vans have 7" more space above the engine than a Vanagon. Taller engines can be used if a box is put over the engine. Our general catalog has many suggestions but no ideal choice.
Before fixing an older van, I suggest you look in the newspaper and call your local wrecking yards for a Vanagon with a bad engine. You may find you can upgrade to a much better van at very little expense.
Does anybody know this?
Did somebody fit a EJ 22 in a "Splitty", please let me know.
Next week i'm buying myself a EJ 22 to put in a "Splitty".
Regards,

Hello, I've got an EJ22 and Porsche 901 5-speed gearbox in my 1965 split bus. It fits nicely but I have changed so many other things it maybe best to speak with Neil-C as I think he is still running a standard fuel tank etc.
Take a look at my build thread in the Kool Rides section |

ISTR Type2Subaru is EJ22 in his Split & stock tank.
I believe Neil has moved/modified his tank but I wouldn't swear to it _________________ The advice you receive on here is worth the paper it's written on.

From memory Neil-C used a Subaru tank under his back seat which really gives lots of space in the engine bay
type2subaru is a very neat install from what I saw at v'fest also both Neil and t2sub are proven so would do well to follow their setups.

sorry to be late to the party
I used the Legacy tank mounted under the back seat.
I did experiment with the splitty tank but in the end went for the Legacy. Easy option for me as I was fitting a custom interior and using the Legacy loom through out the van and its what was designed for the engine , one less thing to experiment with. The van was a shed when I bought it, no wireing, interior or engine, so I had a clean sheet .
I'll try and post a photo of the tank soon ish.
Good luck with the conversion _________________ 66 Camper with 2.2 Subaru
