|
|
I'm looking to upgrade my current 1.8D motor to a 1.8TD from either a escort or Mondeo. Looking at the engines they look pretty much identical except one has a turbo bolted on the back.
Does anybody know if I am likely to be caught out by anything or is it really gonna be just a case of pullin out the non turbo engine and throwing in the turbo's one ?
thanks in advance _________________ 1971 Devon Bay with 1800 Ford Turbo Diesel Engine (wip)

Yo JP word-up!
Yer man now my engine and cooling is running sweet-I wanna go for the 1.8TD too. The blocks do look the same but I hear they are slightly differant. Infact from what I hear they used the same block for all the 1.8TD's up until pressent day. But one mechanic friend of mine recons that the Turbo block is slightly differant and the later ones use a direct injection head on em. My mum has the 1.8TD in her 2003 fiesta and it has twice as much tallk as mine and yours-I keep on thretening to swop engines with her when she's not looking!!
I was just gonna get an old turbo and try it on but I recon I'll just get a whole new engine with one allready on seeing as they dont go for much more than £100 now anyways.
Keep me posted if you hear of any thing.
Easy now

Post the question on Mondeo forum and looks like the change shoud be straight forward as mounts are in same place. Only issue maybe with the intercooler.. but check this out for some handyness
Anyway here is the thread from the mondeo forum.
Best find me a nice cheap mondeo I spose _________________ 1971 Devon Bay with 1800 Ford Turbo Diesel Engine (wip)

Intercooler - well its all down to where you can mount it - for max efficiency you want short pipes and big airflow. On a mondeo the effeciency lost by the length of the pipes on the front mount is offset by the mega airflow it achieves in front. So yeah fine in a mondeo but the issue with a van is the same as the radiator problem........airflow is compromised at the back as there a whole van in the way. If you had a front mount intercooler you will have such long pipes you wont offset the efficiency lost by airflow by cooler efficiency. So were else could you mount it? Underneath where your current rad is - well we know that’s not ideal plus it req long pipe runs, or up in a rear vent which is too small and would req. long pipe runs.
IMHO get a chargecooler then you can put the rad wherever you like to max out your cooling of the charge air even right up front.
Im going with aprilia twin motorbike rads (you get free fans with these too!!) mounted inside my rear vents runniong a PWR chargecooler or mybe the other one I got of ebay. This will give me huge cooling potential and massive airflow. Cooler air = more power.
My other idea was to get some porsche 911 brake cooling ducts to replace the front indicators and duct this flow to a couple of small rads. This would look awesome but after all the effort stu put into getting my fornt panel straight I couldn’t bring myself to do it. However you on the other hand have still to replace your Front panel.......
Think youd better get photoshopping ;-) |

That all sounds like a lot of effort.
But 911 cooling ducts
If I find a mondeo with AC I'll attach that to the top of the inter cooler _________________ 1971 Devon Bay with 1800 Ford Turbo Diesel Engine (wip)

Hi JP
Can't see the point of using a charge cooler as the TD engine doesn't run high enough boost to cause any charge air temperature problems.
I modified my RS Turbo Engine in the Covin last year and am now running 16psi of boost at 170 bhp and it's all cooled using a standard Mitsubushi Shogun intercooler with great results. These intercoolers come with small fan and will work a treat on your Bay at a cost of about £30 . . . Have a look on eBay.
Here's a picture of mine fitted into the Covin wheel well...
Just for the record this intercooler mod also lowered my engine running temp by over 20'C as it took that much more heat out of the charge air from turbo. You should also get enough air flow from one of the side vents in your Bay as long as you box it out so all air available goes through the intercooler....
If this cools my RS Turbo lump it will cool your TD no problem. _________________ DARREN
