Can anything be done to stop these people gaining new names every few days to stop them posting links to whatever they think we need to see?

There seems to be a distinct pattern to it so perhaps us changing something could prevent this?

They are a PITA and I don't really know what the answer is I will check to see if they use the same IP address and block them that way... it's a plan that might just work ! but I doubt it they're smarter than that.

I'm a moderator at another site and we are filtering posts with a rule filter. Sometimes new real members and their first posts are caught in the filter but it's easy to approve them.
The spammers are from different IP's all the time and they use spambots to scan after forums.

One of the biggest forums I go on is a mountain biking one, there to stop anyone they individually approve the new members before sending them a password. I've never seen a spam posting like the ones that we get on here ever!

Oh and they disaprove of hotmail/gmail type addresses too.

I think that might be the way forward for us Pepper just annoying for those that sign up that want to get on and join in having to wait for a hairy arse moderator to logon and approve them.

I'll give it a trial for the next week and see how we go

Change of plan had a spare hour so decided to have a hack around in the code.. one thing I have noticed is that these spammers are very consistent in the certain replies when signing up so I have now slipped a bit of code in to check what they enter and only let them register if they comply...

I'm admin on Covin and Durham Dubbers forum and it's the same story there as well. If we ban IP this can also cause problems with genuine members as it bas a range of IP addresses. Same goes for hotmail accounts etc. I must delete 20 to 30 spammers every day between the 3 forums.
Making registration by Admin only creates dozens of e-mails everyday that you need to check to see if there genuine members, I've tried that one and it's a real pain in the arse.
The only real answer is to try and keep on top of them all and to remove them before they manage to post links etc.

Yup, that's because all those porn people uses the same spam robot.
So funny that the Swedish van-club got spam on the forum too - because it's coded by a member! Grin
