Looks like I might have fixed it! Had her idling in the driveway for about 20mins and never overheated. I have a petcock on the crossover manifold and one I just added to the top of the header tank . I have about 1/3 of coolant filled up in my overflow tank for if it ever needs it and I've also added a clear hose to it from the nipple off the cap (on tank). I noticed it started to bleed out of there about 5"(127mm) of coolant but never anymore than that. When it cooled down overnight I checked it in the morning and the fluid had sucked back into the stk header tank and the hose was clear.
It's a little messy right now cause I didn't want to to a ton of nice permanent work in case this didn't work. I'll drive it around the hood for a bit and see if the new plumbing worked and temps stay ok.
I did have one of the two fans cycle on/off at 205°F (96°C) and that seemed to keep it cooled down to 200-203°F. The second fan never came on. I can set whatever parameters I want the fans to come on with my ECU.
What's normal operating temps and what temps should I have the fans kick on at?
OLD PIC but just for ref:

Sorry to bump this thread from a year ago,but Ive been looking at the diagrams on this thread and have pretty much got the same layout but have just a couple of questions
Coming off the rear of the thermostat are two pipes. one is going to the top/side of crossover pipe and runs round the idle control valve ?
The other one, I have the heater matrix return and top turbo pipe tee’d together and joined to that pipe.
Are these two pipes specific? Are they in/out one of each?
The crossover pipe, the rear 13mm take off,I have going to the top of the WRX tank.
The bottom outlet from the tank runs straight to the heater matrix.
And I have an 8mm line from the rad to the top of the tank.
Does this sound about right? As I say it’s pretty much as per the previous diagram posted on here.
Now running the set up like this I have found on shut down you can here the coolant moving round every now and then, which I’m guessing is an airlock in there?Fan kicks in and off as it should.
Just really want to nail this cooling malarkey it’s driving me nuts !!
Cheers for any pointers guys! |

Hi, it all sounds correct. But TBH it a very old topic for me. I just drive mine these days I’ll have to go and have a looksi at mine and confirm with you.
Your only about 45 minutes travel from me, perhaps I can just bring mine down to you.
Which phase engine are you running? 1,1.5,2 _________________ Think......

| Nice that it’s got to that point! Just shows how reliable it is which is great.its not my daily so it’s not to much of a worry but it’s nice if the weekend toy runs right. Its an early wrx engine , radiator at an angle in the treasure chest floor, (its a pickup) The heater matrix is a small kit car type from car builder solutions, it seems ok but not sure if it’s more of hassle than what it’s worth. |
