New Idea for Volkswagen / Subaru Flywheel

Hi all ... for those yet to do their conversion I may have an alternative idea for your flywheel ... I was nervous about welding my flywheel so got a local turning shop (the people who made up the worlds fastest Indian bikes for the movie) ... to cut the centre out of my VW flywheel and make a new flanged fitted cetre that is held in by 6 (locktite fitted) machine screws with the Subaru PCD 8 hole centre ... this is one of the neatest conversions I've seen and only weighs 15 lb or 6.8kg ... so I'll put up a few photos.

Is the subaru ring gear the correct size for a VW starter motor?

no it's not Rich. The Subaru ring gear is bigger that a vw bellhousing!

It's still the Volkswagen Flywheel and ring gear with a new centre with the Subaru 8 hole PCD flanged and bolted to it ... was originally going to weld it on but my mate doubted the safety of welding to original flywheel as although it's a great quaility casting and could be welded with a cast arc rod there's still a chance of it stress cracking under load ... He suggested this method which I think looks neat as and strong and reliable wanted to share it ... He'll let me know what it cost on Tuesday so will keep U posted

Looks like a very very nice piece of work. I hope they loctited the bolts though... Wink

Most Volvo-converted VW buses here uses the same concept. There are two or three workshops that makes the flywheel as a service. But I think they weld 'em, not sure on that but I know at least my friends bus has a welded flywheel.
