There is no reason why not at all. Tuned Subaru engines can put out over 600 bhp, and I suspect a properly built one would do so more releably and for less money than tuning a (loosely) type 1 based engine. They have all the features thet require the likes of the Pauter and Autocraft engines to have a new block as standard, such as a properly supported crank (5 bearing) and a flanged flywheel.
All it takes is someone with a big enough budget to get interested. There are currently about five 350 bhp plus Subaru engined VW's being built in the UK to my knowledge, but 350 bhp is still fairly tame tuning for a Subaru - an import spec STi 8 is 300bhp as standard.
My understanding is the when Russ Fellows sold his Type 4 / Porsche hybrid engine, the intended replacement was a Subaru, and he only ended up with the 'big block' Type 1(ish) engine as Martin Taylor happend to be selling his at the right price at the righ time. Personally I wish he'd gone for Subaru power, as it would have been very interesting to see what he could get out of one.
If you check out what some of the US sand rail racers are doing with the EZ30 flat six engine, they reckon an internally stock one (I guess that 'stock' doesn't include lower compression pistons) can put out a reliable 600 bhp with a turbo, intercooler, and aftermarket engine management. Now that's a cheap 600 bhp....... _________________ Regards,
