Hi, how do people support their subaru engines in bay vans ?
the reason i say bay vans isnt that i have one i'm just hanging a bus box in a bug and wondering how to use the stock subaru engine mounting points without the use of the gearbox horns as they will be removed,...

Have a look on rjes' site, they have a U shaped cradle that goes from the main rails of the chassis and pick up on the scooby rubber mounts.
If I were you I'd make up something similar that tied into the top damper mounts and the framehorns too. _________________ http://www.ricola.co.uk |

I cut the engine brackets of a stock bay engine support bar, then welded them to a length box section steel, then used the stock subaru mounts.
Then I made 2 plates with captive bolts & welded them to the bottom of the chassis legs either side of the engine. With the new support bar bolted in place, I took some of the weight off the engine with a trolley jack & measured from the ends of the support bar to the mounting plates. I made 2 T-shaped bits & welded them to the support bar a la rjes U-shaped one. It bolts onto the plates I welded onto the chassis.
I have pics if you want them. |

Basically what i'm doing is making the rear end of the chassis again... so the gearbox be lowered out instead of struggling over the horns...
So the consensus is to use the standard subaru engine mounts..
Does anyone have any pics of where the mounts are ?

They are about six inches behind the ends of the frame forks, slightly further apart. You can just see them in this photo http://www.rjes.com/html/rjes_subaru_2_5_syncro_2.html
Mounts parts for Beetles are on my 'to do' list, they have just not made it to the top yet..... _________________ Regards,

Ah - that depends what type of shortened sump you have. No for standard sumps with the bottom chopped off, yes for the german 2 piece cast alloy sumps, which don't allow you to fit the Subaru mounts at all (they were designed for Beetles with cantilevered engines).
The one piece cast alloy sumps I'm working on (slowly - I know!) are designed to work as a system with all my other parts, and will fit around the standard mount rubbers and all other cross members. _________________ Regards,

So as long as i stay away from hitting the original sump with the support bar your lowered sump should fit ?
how much shorter than the standard sump will yours be ?

Sorry about the delay replying. The sump will give the same amount of ground clearance as the stock VW wasserboxer / type 1. The extra oil has to go somewhere though, so it will mainly use the space between the rubber mounts and oil filter / thermostat. Also, the cast sump comes closer to the bell housing mounting face than the stock one. If your mount does not stick back more than 10mm behind (in a rear engined installation) the bell housing mounting face, then the sump should fit. I hope that made sense?
I have fabricated the prototype bay mount cross member today. Now I need to go and fit it up to my mate's bay project the check whether anything needs fine tuning. Another mate has just imported a splitty shell too, so hopefully I'll be using that to develop a mount for splitties too within the next few weeks. _________________ Regards,
