hi, am new to the forum, so i am probably goin to have lots of questions to ask in the near future as i am under goin a full restoration and converstion on my 66 beetle

but at prestent one thing that has got me thinking, is...
is it 100% nessasary to have the intercooler supplyed with air flow

becasue my aim is to keep the rear seats in my bug so i cant have pipes directing air from vents in the rear windows

james

I'm going to use a Subaru Charge Cooler with a small motor bike rad and fan. This solves the problem of having to force cool air into the intercooler but you do need to find somewhere to mount the icle rad/fan.. a chargecooler could solve your problem and give you a bit more ummph Grin

Not having airflow into the intercooler will ruin the performance.

What engine are you thinking of going for ?

Hello Welcome by the way

mm i havent looked to far into engines yet, it will be what ever ej20t lump i can get my hands on thats cheap lol

as for the charge cooler, i dont want to be getting into plumbing all that in really
i spoke to a m8 in wiltshire earlyer who has a legacy turbo power'd oval, this should be running a charge cooler and he hasnt even botherd plumbing it in, he recons the performance you lose is marginal, well...marginal provideing your not doing a long run in it where its gunna get really hot..

If your gonna bother going for a turbo moor then IMHO you really do need the intercooler, it is there for a reason.
The turbo is designed to ram more air into the cylinders prior to ignition, however due to the temperature at which a turbo runs any air that flows through it will increase massively in volume therefore putting you back to square one.
cheers Ian.

i agree with ian - theres no point at all in runing a turbo engine without an intercooler or chargecooler. Subaru even made a nice cheap chargecooler and in light of all the other modifications you will be doing its hardly a big hassle to plumb it in. If you dont use one or you decide to follow your mates example your just wasting valuable horsepower.

welcome btw Hello

heat from the turbo is marginal, the majority of the heat is due to the fast compression of the air, when done rapidly (as a turbo does) this creates a lot of heat which you do need to get rid of...

Agreed with that but a turbo does create a hell of a lot of heat thus the more regular oil changes.
