gearbox woes...help please

i have recently changed the input chaft on my box for my alfa conversion. anyway, putting the bearing back on today i used a drift to hammer it home. the axle at this time was supported on the spring plate. before i did this this there was the usual rotational movement in the axle, and all seemed well. After tightening up the bearing cover etc etc i now note that there is no movement in the axle. It seems as if the axle is stuck rigid and doesnt even move up and down on the spring plate.

what the fcuk have i done.I didnt notice this until it was all back together.

on raising the car on the jacks again the axle turns rotationally internally. but have i fucked it? Is there anything i can do without stripping the lot down again, or have i fucked the box??

i have posted this on another forum, just wondering if anyone has experienced this before

I'm not quite sure what you mean? is it the driveshaft itself you were getting back on or part of the gearbox itself?

You talk about the gearbox but then you mention about spring plates so is it the drive shaft itself or the gearbox?

difficilt to explain. If you leave the axle loose (ie not attached to the spring plate at the hub end) it should be free to move around, left right, up down etc

mine is stuck solid

as an example i would use umagine changing gear with your gear lever...it moves around. Now imagine it stuck solid so you cant change...that wot ive got in the axle

so by reattatching the axle tube to the spring plate there is no movement in the tube so no suspension travel

does that explain it?

i was putting the whole driveshaft and axle tube back on after removing it to replace my input shaft

Is this a swing axle? If so the tube doesn't move when it's bolted up to the spring plate.

Can you post a picture of what you're talking about please?

the shaft should pivot at the gearbox end if i am not mistaken...the passenger side one does and i didnt take that one off!!!

the fixed end would be at the spring plate

as the spring plate moves up and down with the suspension, the axle should pivot at the box end

swing axle bug

in case people did not know what i was on about i have attached a couple of vids. The drivers side axle is rigid solid, but the passenger side still pivots





any help would be appreciated

the drivers side is the one with the problem

i dont want to take it apart until i know what the problem is so i dont have the same thing when it all goes back togther

have you touched the CV joint? they tend to go together incorrectly easier than they do correctly. As a result they don't move about as described.

you need to put differant amounts of gaskets on in between gearbox and axel tube. If you buy a gearbox gasket kit, you get loads of gaskets to use as spacers. If you get my drift.
