spent last weekend trying to sort out a mates van with a VW1.9td it seems a lot slower than my bay with a VW 1.6td and my van weighs in over 500kgs more than his .
his 1.9td is the second engine that we have tried and this 1 was pulled from a late seat toledo with only 67000 miles
my engine is from a passat 1.6td with intercooler it has a small kkk turbo and the engine revs happy to 4500rpm, the seat engine has a bigger turbo that seems a bit slower to spool up, and the engine will only
rev to 4200rpm.
the difference in driving the 2 vans is not really noticed until you get to 35-40 mph then my van just flies and over a 2 mile run it would be 20 seconds quicker.
my conclusion is big is not always best .
just for reference can we have an idea of max rpm for different diesels.
here are some that i know of , i have calculated theoretical max speeds using 195x 14 tyres on a 2 litre transmission.
VW 1.6d 4800 rpm 97mph
VW 1.6td 4500 rpm 91mph
VW 1.9td 4200 rpm 85mph
VW 1.9tdi 4000rpm 81mph
[/list] |

hi alex do you have a modified transmission ?
using calculations on the info you have specified ie 2litre transmission with a 4.57 diff and a 0.852 top gear, and 225 x 17x 55 tyre and can only get 69mph @3400rpm or are your tyres bigger ? |

even with 235 its still only 70mph@3400rpm
the reason im asking is there is a diesel t25 gearbox with 0.78 top gear
and using a 4.57 diff from a 1.9 water boxer t25 would give really tall gearing , 10% better than a 2litre tranny . i was thinking of going this way with a tdi project . |

think this is where the peugeot comes out top starts to red line above 5000rpm and must be doing nearly this in the bay with 2.0L box standard size tyres at a 100mph ,,,,, on the turbo the governers come in and hold you back so on the type 25 with 5 speed box balls out standard tyres 90mph but with much larger tyres 100mph _________________ Auto Union Munga Jeep ,T4 2.4td , T4 2.5tdi ,Mercedes S Class on LPG , 66 splity deluxe , GP mk1, 3 type 25s 1 with 1.9dt pug engine + 1 with N/A pug engine ,,there are 6 t25s with pug power in Darlington |

In the ford brochure it says the 1.8 diesel revs to 4800? and the turbo engine goes to 4500.

i have read that vw say that the 1.9tdi industrial stationary engine should be held at a maximum constant 3600rpm.
the 1.6td has much shorter crank and revs a lot higher than the 1.9 derv |

| just because a engine will rev to 5000rpm or whatever before the govener kicks in does'nt mean that you can rev it to that constantly on the motorway, doing so will only cause additional engine wear and tear on the engine |

,,,,,,, some of this may be right ,,,, but i used to constantly do that often for long journeys ,,,,,, and them days i do'nt know how they used to do so well as was not one for knowing when to change the oil , when using engines from some cars that have transverse engines like the golf gti and peugeot diesel ,, i used to find that when the oil was getting down to the topup mark on the dipstick ,,the oil light would fliker on heavy braking telling me that it needed topping up ,, then to get above 220k miles out of the said peugeot td , eaven running down the strip with over 200k on it ,, _________________ Auto Union Munga Jeep ,T4 2.4td , T4 2.5tdi ,Mercedes S Class on LPG , 66 splity deluxe , GP mk1, 3 type 25s 1 with 1.9dt pug engine + 1 with N/A pug engine ,,there are 6 t25s with pug power in Darlington |
