How many times has one thread been resurected?! To keep the info in one place I'll add it in here. Someone, somewhere on here, found out that the Bosch 120A alternator (as fitted to 'new' beetles) fits onto vw 1.9 diesels but doesn't have a 'W' take off for the tach. Well, looking through Sven's website I found that inside the plastic back panel are 6 connections (each a clamp with 2 copper wires), any of these can be used as a 'W' take off, just solder a wire onto the (cleaned) connector. So a big thanks to Sven for putting the info out there, I just thought it might be handy to people searching the subject here.

I have recently acquired a job-lot of 1986/87 vintage, new-old-stock, 52 mm diameter, VDO Cockpit 0~6000 rpm alternator-sensed tachometers; one of which I intend to substitute into my 1973 VW "1600" Type 2 Westfalia Continental campervan, with VW Type 4 style air-cooled engine.

When I have the opportunity to test them, I shall put the surplus tachometers up for sale, including my 52 mm diameter, VDO Cockpit "Night-Design" 0~6000 rpm alternator-sensed tachometer.

I think on the Peugeot it fits at the back of the engine at the top standing up to a wrinkle in the reaf of the flywheel. Some Peugeot picked a heartbeat from the loom in the dash after a stabilizer go for portage diesel, far less complex, an authentic good diesel.

is naskeet's diagram above suitable for any VDO tachometer or is there a special one that will work off the "W" terminal on a diesel alternator. I have a fairly standard petrol-engine VDO tacho out of a Porsche 924 in my van and it was run off the petrol engine. Is it as simple as plugging in a wire from the W alt terminal to the signal input terminal on the rev counter?

Early-type VDO and other brands of tachometers, are specifically intended for only one connection option; either the ignition system or the alternator W-terminal, but not both!

There are some modern VDO and other brands of tachometer, which have the facilities to connect to both the ignition system of a spark-ignition (i.e. petrol-driven) engine or the W-terminal (factory-fitted or later retro-fitted)on the alternator. The alternator can be on a petrol-driven engine or a diesel-driven engine; it does not matter which. What is significant, is the maximum rev range of the engine and whether the tachometer's rev range is appropriate.

My VW Type 4 engine, 1973 VW "1600" Type 2 is still awaiting the retro-fitment of a 1980s vintage, new-old-stock 52 mm VDO Cockpit 0~6000 rpm tachometer, with connection facility for an alternator's W-terminal.
