Can't scoff at 100bhp at the wheels I'm hoping for summut around there out of my derv.
Bus is looking very shiny, will it be getting used and abused over the winter?
hopefully get a few doughnuts out of it when it gets a bit slippy with your newly tuned engine _________________ 1971 Devon Bay with 1800 Ford Turbo Diesel Engine (wip)

Cheers jp, not exactly scooby turbo power I know. It does however give a bay a useful turn of speed, accelerates up hills, suprises a few people at the traffic lights and generally just makes it much nicer to drive on todays road (I imagine it does anyway - I've never driven a lawn mower one to compare it to - ha)
Good luck with the derv, should be great when its done with the better consumption to boot. You just using a 6 rib box to pull the revs down for the derv.
I hope to be using the bus a bit over the winter, not going to molly coddle it but I will be sensible about it - don't think I'll be taking it out in the snow or just after they've salted the roads. Hopefully be at bus freeze next month. Better to keep it used once in a while anyways. |

Wow it's been a while nearly 5 years on the road. Been eventful so just thought I'd post up a few notable events.
First and only real mishap was a washer of the air filter got eaten by a hungry weber carb resulting in mashed piston and bent valves. Replacement engine was required. Looked like this still
On a happier note all fixed up it served as a perfect wedding vehicle for me and my long suffering other half. Set of new shoes to give it the classy look to.
Another shot of new wheels.
Another sad note my now brother in law to be ran up the back of it. Minor damage with new lights and engine lid and rear quarter respray required. Got it all done quick and cheap by the chap who painted it. I still let him marry my sister even took my sister to her wedding in it!
Spent the next couple of years renovating a newly purchased house so nothing really changed with the van. It did pull it's weight at times as builders delivery vehicle though
Now its still going strong, now on its third set of wheels.
Oh and proof I've actually used it for a spot of camping as well.
Still on the list. Improve interior and fit a 2 litre box. Hopefully before its first foray to the continent later this year. |

Ha cheers jp everyone says that about the wheels! I prefer the slotties though so they're less classy and thus far more me Steels were nice for the wedding though.
Got a box a while back but unfortunately I got duped and its not as good as I thought so I've been saving for a rebuild before I fit it.
Toying with the idea of a zetec next winter as well, for better mpgs. It's only doing 20. South of France this summer will be muchos £££. |

Been away a while again.... so a little update.
I've a good excuse this time, our baby boy was born last December means I've had a busy year or so.
So 2017 major news was, as promised a trip down to the south of France for our first foreign holiday in the van. Preggers wifey 'n' all
It was great. Did over 2000 miles in 2 weeks and the old thing did superbly. Aside from having to free off a sticky caliper in a supermarket car park (45mins) she was faultless.
We did consume some fuel though... 100+ gallons of the stuff.
Also went to Hot Rod Drags show, ended up camping next to another bay which on closer inspection was obviously water cooled, it turned out also to be ford power, 90s model RS2000 lump in it. Random coincident or what!!
Did a couple of MTB trips too. Finally using it for what I bought it for back in '05.
2018 was full of short day trips with the boy on board. He loves going in the van.
And also beem playing on the track and taking advantage of times when 2 seats are sufficient, its also my daily.
The expense of the France trip was still hurting me when back in May I happened upon a 63k mile beauty of a mondeo for super super cheap... this is not my first mondeo donor for this van but this time the wires will not scare me off!!! Fortunately my folks were happy to stash it for me until time was available.
Over the Christmas hols I finally started making moves towards Zetec power. 2.0 16v & modern EFI. Hoping for 140bhp and 30mpg, wish me luck.
The old faithful pinto retired...
Making way for miles of spaghetti... this is the bit I hate.
Hopefully be done for spring. |

Thanks Wilfred.
Using the same vw transaxle as I was with the pinto. I ran a 1600 3 rib box for 6 years or so but eventually I got myself a 2000 6 rib for the slightly longer ratios and strength. I kept the 1600 belhousing though. To got the for engine i have an adapter plate and a custom input shaft. |

Making steady progress...
One Zetec stripped of superfluous ancillaries. New cam belt and waterpump fitted.
Not been without problems though... most significant of which is the clutch/flywheel combo.
Firstly the flywheel and clutch on the 2.0 zetec is MASSIVE, it won't even fit in the bellhousing of the transaxle. The solution was a 1800 zetec flywheel with a slight bit of machining round the outside. I'd planned to use the 1800 clutch too but immediately realised the splines on my input shaft are different. So I then found a ford friction plate with correct splines and the correct outer diameter with the idea of using this with the 1800 cover, unfortunately it transpired that this was a none starter too.
Fortunately when having the machining done on the flywheel I'd had extra work done such that I could fit a pinto clutch cover just in case... so the clutch situation ended up with me having to put my hand in my pocket for a special 2.0 pinto clutch with the right spline setup (1600 pinto) which is produced by Retroford. The only downside apart from the added expense is the this setup on the zetec flywheel is thicker so my extended release bearing will need shortening...
Second issue was the auxiliary belt run after removing the PAS and AC... the only sensible belt run without additional idlers would spin the waterpump the wrong way. Luckily for me there is a zetec pump from the smaller engines escorts which is designed to spin the other way so fortunately very easy solution here.
Once the clutch arrives I'll be hooking it up to the gearbox in situ to begin making engine mounts and exhaust. |

More progress. Engine is in and it's pretty neat I think.
All the engine mounts sorted now just had to tweak the engine crewmember to miss the sump.
