The ends of your UJs should be at 90 degrees to each other, otherwise you will get a phasing result, exactly as you describe...

No, the ends have to be exactly in line. Look it up on youtube.

I just did not have the flanges in the same planes.

Today I made some real improvement.

I lowered the rear end of the van, one notch, using the spring plates. This drops it 5,5 cm. Them I slammed big ass tires under it to maintain accaptable ride hight.

Believe it or not, but my axles are now damn near straight!!!!! Best mod ever since completing the build. Will make a piccie.

I had used these tires before, and than I thought they were too big but later I found out that I had the airflow sensor wrong way around that ride. Now it seems fine!

All that is left to do is make a little notch as I found out the drive shaft just hits the chassis when I come of a traffic bump.

I got some steel rims of a Mercedes C class. These have the exact same bolt pattern, centre hole and even the ET value is exactly the same as original VW t2.

16 inch steel rims. With the following tires: 205/80r16

These are really, really big tires but fit straight in the wheel arches.

setup is like this, but only the wheels at the front are different (bit smaller to level the van)

So yesterday I notched the chassis legs just a bit as the drive shafts were hitting these on heavy bumps etc.

You can also see the axles are pretty straight now! also, it drives great!

(ignore the left rubber joint cover, that was a bit twisted on this pic.)

will you measure sump/bellhousing to ground clearance now that you've made changes to the ride height/tyres? I'm interested in your approach Happy

Hey,

I measured it and it is 12 cm from floor to the lowest point, which is the bellhousing. This is not an awful lot but still plenty. What is more important is that this lowest point is exactly between the rear wheels, so it will come up going on or off a ramp or something.

I never hit anything so far. the back can actually also be made a bit higher, like 2 cm without stretching the cv's. But with the current height, my van is leveled so front and back at same height.

Just to bump this thread a bit, a subaru gears tranny swap with their 3.9 final drive ratio and a non-turbo 5MT tranny's stock gearing lines up pretty well with VW tdi tranny gear ratios - at 2500rpm you can achieve 72mph with stock 185R14 tires. I *think* this is the way I am going to go. The flipped passat tdi tranny is definitely intriguing, especially since I have one, but I think the driveshaft angle and sump clearance are going to always bother me.

Certainly the flipped passat tranny is the less expensive way to go though . .

Could be a good option..

with my current setup, there is hardly an angle in the driveshafts though. Clearance is pretty good in my opinion, but not as good as original though. Still, I never hit anything. no matter what bumps I drive over.

Dargh, nevermind, I didn't update my spreadsheet well and the subarugears table was referencing a VR6 final drive ratio of 3.386. Only way to make the subarugears ratios make sense is through using subaru diesel gears. Bummer. I bet those are tough to come by. Back to using DUK tranny

Those UJ drive shafts were used by Bugbox in Europe. They sold them too. Think they got them off a tractor company? They fitted them to there Porsche conversion splitscreens. Think they got on alright with them.
