So should I connect the heater return (hose at the top) to the pipe at the bottom of the expansion tank?

I understand the theory about the expansion bottle holding a higher pressure due to the compressed air in there.

However as the coolant is going into the top it's also being pushed down out through the bottom also. My Subaru coolant system has the heater return going into the top of the bottle and out via the bottom and into the hot line to the radiator. Had always worked fine. I know it's s Subaru and not VW.

T'ing into the bottom line would make sense also but I think it's abit pointless. Not sure

basically the expansion tank should not be part of the circulating coolant...

the expansion tank has two connections. 1 to allow coolant to enter the circulation. This allows you to fill through the expansion tank. usually at the bottom of the tank.

1 for pressure, usually at a higher point, at higher point of the tank. There shoudl be no in or outputs on the expansion tank that make part of the circulation....
