Looking good Kai!
From the pics it looks like you set up the strut top positions in full rebound position? Is it all narrowed? A friend is about to do the same but with AWD so any advice would be good..

Cheers,
Rich

Hello mate,

Thanks, it's a vast improvement over the beam that was chucked out Happy

You are correct in the majority of the pictures the strut is obviously in full rebound. The key goal when setting it up is to have the arms virtually level with the ground. The reason I'm sure you know is that they at the furthest position during the movement ark of the arm. It's all about of guess work when setting up the top location as its entirely upto the characteristics of the strut which where totally unknown. However since fitting them it's apparent they only have approximately 2" of travel. Since the last pictures where taken the car has settle down much more and is sitting lower. We took the gamble using the Cayman struts as we had no idea how they would behave however i always was aware that I may have to opt for a different coil over set. By chance it's turned out OK and I'm much happier with the ride and stance of the car.

The track has been narrowed. From memory it was about 11" but I may be totally wrong with that as the measurement was taken during my initial mock up some time ago.

Your friends project sounds interesting. Is it the Porsche set up he is using?

I can't help but notice that the struts I've used are compatible with the 996 and it wouldn't be too hard s task to go AWD in the future. I'm just happy to have it back on the road.

Sounds good. He is using 996 C4 front end with aftermarket coilovers, already put the whole rear end in. Running Jap EJ20 on 964 trans converted to RWD but will change back to AWD later on. First phase is to get the front end in and then do the tunnel mods for the prop next year..

You've made it look too easy!

Brembos on the rear.

Still awaiting the arrival of my replacement rear shocks. 4 weeks I was quoted. Mental. Put in an order at VW Heritage. Going to finish making the intermittent wiper function work. Also going to wire up the heated resr window and get that working properly. Also I've got to wire up my new speedo to the speed sensor in the gearbox. Lots of small jobs to get stuck into. Might even go get an MOT for it.

Got a link?

My front shocks are mega hard. It's still an improvement over the beam though. As the shocks are the PASM versions apparently they revert to the hard setting when the PASM system is off. Tomorrow I've got access to a Cayman and hope to find out abit more about the voltage required by the shock to get it into its soft setting. If all else fails I'll just stick a set of coil overs in to match the rears when they eventually arrive.

New shocks. Took Darren two days to fit them. Lots of complaints about how the AVO shocks fit to my Notchback. These Gaz ones ride beautifully. I actual fact the new rears highlight just how hard the front really is. Definitely need to sort the front shocks out. I will put power to the front shocks and hopefully that'll be it once they're in their soft setting. Otherwise it's either fork out for some cheap non PASM shocks or go full on with a matching set of Gaz front shocks. Decisions decisions.

Made arrangements to present the car at the Volksworld show this year. Will be outside with the Type 3 & 4 club all weekend. I've got to somehow turn up at the show with two cars straight after a week camping in the Cheetah.

The kid is now Taxed and MOT'd for the next year. Still makes me grin when taxing this thing, even better now we don't have to display a tax disc.

So I've powered up my front shocks. Just stuck +12v to them. It's softer on a bounce test but still harsh as f**k when out driving. Going to get some new coilover a for the front end and sort that out.

Engine has a judder/hesitation potential misfire below 3k rpm, looking at changing the plugs, has the new age coil on plug type coil packs which are apparently bulletproof so I'm hoping they're not the problem as they fetch £100 each. Thing still goes like stink and gladly reves beyond red bit of the Rev counter as I found out after the throttle pedal got wedged open by a rough screw floating around under my feet.

Those with an eagle eye may have spotted the birthmark has been almost taken care off. All
In the name of the volksworld show haha. Still got s pretty big snag list to work through but nothing massive to work on.
