| Ive got a 1Y in the back of my Late Bay. 'Hot' water is piped from an adapter on the front of the cylinder head to a T7 matrix under the dash. The problem is that at low/normal revs there is very little water flow and the heater never heats up (but the engine does). Im thinking that an additional water pump is required to boost the Hot Water flow to the heater. Is there a pump that is recomended or would a Bosch Universal one suffice? |

Are you sure there is no air in the sytem? I've used the same connection on the cilinder head, but no issues. nice warm air in the van! _________________ 1973 BayWindow running 1.9 110 bhp TDI with flipped gearbox. |

| There might be an airlock I guess. I can see water exiting into the expansion bottle only at higher revs though. Is it bad form to plumb the return into the expansion tank? I wondered if it might be too high. What's the best way of bleeding out an airlock? |

Going to guess that your heater is the highest coolant point in your vehicle, hence it is most probably causing an airlock.
With my install (EJ20) I added an additional 8mm bleed line connecting the heater to the header tank. This cured all airlock issues. _________________ Think......

| The heater is on the floor behind the handbrake so it should be way lower than the header tank. |

Interesting.....
So the coolant line from the engine to the heater matrix, what size is it and is it in a kind of direct route?
In saying that though my heater lines go all over the place, also a couple of 90 bends so flow shouldn't be a problem.
What heater is is and how does it control the heat temperature?
Before I installed the bleed line I would back fill my heater system from return line in an attempt to prebleed the air from the heater. _________________ Think......

So, the return of your heater ends up in your expansion tank? That is no good.
There will be some pressure in the expansion tank. If you have the return directly on the expansion tank, basically there will be pressure on the return, causing an opposite flow. Basically your water will stand still.
You need to integrate the return in the return of the water from the block, and incorporate it in the flow of the water. Just like original. _________________ 1973 BayWindow running 1.9 110 bhp TDI with flipped gearbox. |

Yeah the feed is from the front of the block at the top pritty much straight to the T7 Heater (http://www.t7design.co.uk/index.php/heating/heaters/3-5kw-lightweight-heater.html) 13mm ID Rubber Pipe. Retun the same way but T's into the expansion tank return.
I can see water flowing into the expansion tank at higher revs - with the cap off. So i guess this is exactly as you have diagnosed when the cap is on the pressure is too high and there is no flow.
On a 1Y or AAZ where do you recomend the return should go? |
