First of all is Hi I am new to the site and I have joined with the hope I can get a little info.
I am a vw trike builder from sunny cornwall and I am running a 1641 AB code twin port type 1 engine with swing axle box, last year I spotted a trike with a Subaru engine which was a 1.8.
I have the chance to pick up a complete Brat engine and gearbox, what else do I need?
Will it fit or can I use my original gearbox or does it need changing as well?

Hi,

as your trike is probably a rear engine steup you can not use the Subaru gearbox because it would leave you with 4 reverse and one forward gear.

There are adaptor plates that mate a Subaru to a VW Gearbox no problem.
The Brat engine is an older design called EA series. It has a distributer and carburettor or later models single point injection wich makes it a pretty straight forward conversion.

But, these engines are old now, at least 25 years. Parts are getting harder to find and they don´t offer much more if any more power than a beeft up Type 1.

The most popular Subaru engines for VW conversions are the EJ series in 1.8, 2.0, 2.2 and 2.5 displacement. Wiring is a bit of a challenge but well documented and you want to have a whole car as a donor with all matching ECU and wiring.
