Ok so I have got a 2003 Legacy as a donor and it has the crypto transponder immobilizer. I have the whole car so everything is matched and it drove home so I know everything all worked.
I stripped out the loom a few weeks ago and started to remove all the things I didn't need, being very careful as I went through it to make sure I didn't cut out anything I might need.
Anyway I've started fitting it to a board and methodically working through all the aspects, cutting to the chase I extended the immobilizer and reconnected a couple of loose wires and I cannot get it to turn off.
putting power to the system the light flashes as it would to say that it is protected but as soon as I put power to ignition the light is solid. Regardless of where I put the transponder to the ring it wouldn't turn off. (just to point out I didn't extend the wiring to the ring).
Someone suggested on VZi that I needed the barrel as it needs to be in a set position, so I removed the barrel from the car, fitted the ring and it still won't turn off.
I checked back through the wiring diagram for the immobilizer pinout and retraced the wiring, everything is connected correctly and tested the continuity and it is all fine. I haven't got it plugged into the engine, would it make a difference?
Any ideas?
Also I cannot read any error codes, I tried plugging the OBD2 (standard) connector into my laptop but it said it couldn't connect to the ECU and the CEL stays on. I only have the green connectors (with orange wire) no black or white test connectors?
Please help!
Edit: Ok so I got the OBD2 to read, needed to ground the black/blue wire but no immobiliser faults, just engine faults with low signal which is obvious as its not connected. As soon as I disconnect there's not lights at all unless I remove the ground from the OBD2 connector
One thing that is bothering me is that should the brown/red wire coming from the immobiliser module be a negative feed? and the light should get a positive feed from the battery, fuse 2 according to the wiring diagram for my Legacy, however my system is showing a positive feed coming from the brown/red wire. Is it possible that something somewhere is connected incorrectly, even though I have double checked everything this is the only bit that confuses me.
Ok well just to keep this updated, I managed to get it all working. Once I had connected it all to the engine and everything had a suitable grounding point there were no issues.
Obviously I won't be able to fully tell 100% till it is running but at least I managed to get the lights to turn off correctly, both the CEL and the immobiliser light on the key with them both outputting the correct negative feed.
My assumptions were correct in the fact that the ECU must have needed a proper grounding point since it grounds at 5 points through the engine, without this the power grounds through a different location, notably the one with least resistance which were both the CEL and IMM lights <-- so one thing to bear in mind, it won't always work on the bench!

Glad you got it working. Sometimes the key barrel is necessary, I have a key from a '03 Liberty(Legacy) that works fine just sitting in the antenna ring. Yet the key from the '98 Forester requires the key barrel to work. The only difference is the '03 key has the built in remote locking and the '98 key has the separate fob for the remote locking.Later on I'm going to try the early chip in the later key to see if that works.
I would get an antenna fault (53), doing a reset on the ecu helps when you change the key position/barrel location.
