Occasional cutout at idle & stutter under load on m'way

As title says really. Van runs great apart from engine dies when pulling up to traffic lights occasionall, but restarts immediately. The other issue is when under load for a long periods at motorway speeds the engine can cutout, It restarts a second or two later by itself after coasting. If I keep below 3k rpm issue does not occur. Will accelerate nicely through rev range so only seems affected under prolonged periods.

The trouble was more pronounced when I had air leaks in the intake system so could this suggest running lean or lack of fuel delivery for longer periods?

Considerations?:
- I do not have a thermostat - fitting one this week.
- no lambda sensor - do I need one (ej20 97'ish legacy) and if so where s best for placement. I have a wire hanging down which I'm hoping is where I connect to.

Lambda sensor would be first thing I would do. It gives feedback about the mixture, so in combination with your suggestion that it was worse when you had airleaks, a faulty mixture seems likely.

other than this, i have no suggestions for you (I'm a TDI Man :-)

I know you say it's a 97ish vehicle but are you running vehicle speed sensor. Some of your symptoms match what I have read on rjes web site. Not all engines need them but it will depend if your install is new

Before I installed the speed sensor.... no before I got the bloody speed sensor to finally start working. My ECU would go into limp mode and the fuel cut would kick in at 4000RPM. it would also log a error code in the ECU for speed sensor.

Have ordered a vss & reverse manifold plus plumbing kit from RJES. Also, ordered a ls02 lambda and need to order boss to weld into exhaust.

Should hopefully sort everything out.

I don't have an Ecu reader, is it necessary to clear error codes etc once remedial work is completed?

1997..... Should have the read memory connectors within your loom. If not you just need to find the correct wires coming outta the ecu and connect them to...... I think they're earthed or plus 12v but I'm not sure. Never had to correct them being chopped out myself so never looked into how they actually work. You have the read memory and test connectors. Whatever it is they plug into is shared by both connectors.

Have you an engine management light? If not fit one.

All else failing just disconnect the battery for 10/15 minutes and it should clear the ecu memory.
