have done an ej22 conversion with rjes products and wiring loom
really smooth install quick and easy
richards stuff really high quality but have run into problems
engine was running fine when removed from vehicle
but will not start now in t25
checked all connections etc
but when turning over with plugs out the firing order is not in sequence
what would cause this ?
crankshaft sensor?
ignition amplifier?
have tried coil pack no different
any ideas or has anyone had this issue |

What year is it?
The early and also much later Subaru engines with the individual coil packs all have a similiar plug for the coil packs. It would be WAY too easy to get the coil packs muddled up on each bank as the plugs per bank are all the same, but if you look closely (on my phase one engine) the plugs are different shades of grey which helps to recognise them. But then if it would be easy to get them on the wrong side of the engine too when installing the engine loom (dunno if Rich modifies that part of the harness)
However!!!
If you have the single coil pack in the middle of your inlet manifold, with HT leads running down to the plugs then this is a wasted spark system. It fires the cylinders in pairs. One cylinder would be at TDC on its combustion cycle (and sparking) and the other is somewhere on its exhaust cycle (and is wasted spark). That's could lead you into thinking its firing in the wrong order.
Otherwise you talking wrong crankshaft trigger wheel, Incorrect cam wheels.
I've heard of cam wheels being wrong but this was reference a 2.5 conversion into a classic impreza.
Actually scratch that as you've had it running before so my money is on the coils being incorrectly connected, you having a wasted spark system and thinking that's your problem. Something completely different _________________ Think......

That's an early phase one engine, should have the individual coil packs fitted per spark plug. Sorry I was thinking of the injector plugs when I mentioned grey plugs. I think with the coil packs it's one grey and one black plug per side for individual coil packs so you can easily get them the wrong way round. The. Coil packs are ALL manufactured with the same type of plug to make it easy for replacement, it's very easy to incorrectly connect the coil pack to the wrong cylinder.
Did you include the engine harness when you sent off your loom to be converted? I'm on about the small loom which contains all the engine connections underneath the inlet manifold and is connected with the three large square multipin connectors. It would be very easy to get this in the wrong way and have the coils and injectors connected up incorrectly 180degress out.
If your totally confident that's it correct then your best bet would be to download the Subaru manual for that year. It's easy to find on the net.ham that manual there is an EFI trouble shooting guide which would guide you into tracing the injector lines from the ecu - igniter - coils. Then you can check the single cables are going to the correct coil pack. It also has a general step by step guide flow chart into tracing problems.
This is all hypothetical though that your problem does infact lie within the ignition circuit.
I spent ages trying to start mine only to realise it had already used the 15litres of fuel I stuck into the tank _________________ Think......

| Have checked wirrng again harness connection to the engine has 2 main grey plugs that can't be plugged in wrong way round as different sizes all plugs are on its back firing as if 180 out I'm stumped |

I think your talking about the large grey square multi pin connections between the engine harness and the main harness. One of them had a bracket and was attached to the engine bell housing I recall.
The plugs I'm referring too are which I know you can get mixed up and are actual two pin plugs which are between the coil packs and the engine harness. They are located around the top of the rocker cover. If you where to remove the coil packs then it's the plug you would have to remove to withdraw the coil pack from the harness. Getting these plugs the wrong way round is the only way the engine could fire out of sink as you described.
However.....
If your diagnosing an out of sink firing order by hearing a back fire I could also be inclined to think the the timing belt could be a tooth out.
Also be aware that the early "Classic" style coil packs are renowned for failing and causing strange happenings.
Have you found the online PDF manual for the engine yet? _________________ Think......

Sounds just like what i did: Check you havent connected the injectors and cam sensor back to front on the right side of the engine. It can be done and will act just like you say.
Do you have a fault code reader in your harness? I am sure Rich puts these in all of his harness's. If so what is the code? I have had a (TPS) failure recently Throttle position sensor. This did a similar thing as you explain.
Alternatively have you tried adjusting the position of your key in the Subaru barrel surround. If this it not position correctly you will not get the motor to run.
When i fitted my motor for the first time i had issues and again recently when doing head gaskets. It is normally a bad wrong connection.
Good luck. _________________ 89 Crew Cab (Subaru 2.5na)

So you have one coil pack?
Ht leads down to the spark plugs too? _________________ Think......
