|
|
http://there.dino.com/harold/bus2.php
Is a link to a man that modified his type2 Hubs to 5x130PCD (Porsche Fitment)
Here's the stock hub and modified hub side by side.
I have emailed the guy.
What I want to know is this safe. ?
Can it be done ?
I am happy with the T3 rear drums.
I have early 944 na disc setup ready to be fitted upfront.
I would've fitted adapters to the rear of my van.
I cannot allow my rear track to be widened any more.
((It's a '66 Splittty with a T3 whole rear suspension, engine+gearbox. ))
My main questions are ?
Will this modification prove to be a safe alteration ?
Will the Internal brake shoe mechanisms fit with ease if I were to perform this modification on my rear hubs+drums. ?
Thanks in advance.

When you say it's a T3 rear end do you mean a Type 3?
Perhaps it's just me but it appears to be a very complex method but perhaps it's just too late in the evening for me to compute all those figures
The hub modification does look a little thin around the edges.
Can you not just fit the rear disc setup from a 944? Or am I missing something here? _________________ Think......

Sorry Kai.
I mean T25.
Some circles they're referred to T3.
Here's the reply to the email. Sent him.
I asked him about the stud being pressed in and did he machine splines into the new holes he drilled in the hub.
>>. Hi there.
The studs are pressed in. I use a short piece of pipe over the stud, a thick washer and steel lug nut. 19mm socket and a 1/2" drive breaker bar. The hole in the hub is not splined. I used after market Porsche 72mm studs. I went with a longer than stock stud because I wasn't sure if I would need a spacer.

ok.
Heres a pic he sent me..
The new, modified hub is on the left again.
as you can see he just welded up the old holes.
i dunno about the studs..
They are awful close to the edge of the hub..
what do you guys think..? |

I wasnt totally sure which T3 you were refuring too. I know more about Type 3's then i do about buses. When I said it was complex I was referring to the possibility of doing this on a Type 3 rear end, my brake upgrade was easy
The studs could be describe as splined but tbh it's more of a coarse finish to help them grip. You just hammer them in or out with a porsche hub easy peasey.
I think in an ideal world and when compared side by side they do look alittle thin on the edge. However in the real world I very much doubt it would fail. If it was to fail it would be gradual, you'd still have 4more studs holding it on
I wonder how much of the internal rim mountin face is in contact with the hub with this conversion? _________________ Think......

| Has he spot faced the holes on the back so the studs sit flush against the hub? |

They're just where he filled up the old holes. |

This is something Like I'd need myself. As I am keeping the drums at the back.
I just got my four Genuine Fuchs rims last night. (6 hour round trip)
They came off a 911 Targa.
The seller wouldn't give me the wheel nuts. (tightarse)
You'd think in the good will of St. Patrick he'd throw them in.
Shocked how light 911 wheel nuts are.
Anyway.
I'm delighted.
I'll post pictures of them when I get time.
I hope I can make them fit SAFELY. |

i thought about this a long time ago and didnt do it for two reasons 1) the material around the outside of the stud is very small 2) the new studes are mounted on the strentheners on the hub.
Creative engineering used to do a properly engineered version of 130pcd hubs but they were very expensive - this was going to form the basis for my conversion until i just welded the whole porsche swing arms on. |

I meant the new holes where the new studs are.
If they are not perfectly flat then the tension won't be right when you tighten up the wheel nuts. (Ie...not safe) it might be that that part of the hub is already flat, it was just a thought when I looked at your pix. |

Quick question.
When 5x112 first appeared on Bays. Around '71 right.
Was the same hub used on T25's from 80-90. ? |

| could you copy the creative engineering type of hubs by having the splined centres machined out of a stock pair of hubs and having a pair of disks made out of thicker steel, drilled for Porsche pattern and welded to the splined centres by someone who really knows how to make a strong weld and can guarantee it. |
