Got my starter today it's a 02A911024X, and is a long nose type.
From my measurements of flange positions, pinion length and throw, I reckon a 10mm flat spacer should work with a 76mm hole. Where did you get your counter sink M12 bolts?

Cheers all the help.
Stephen

did it look like the one above in the end or did it have a smooth section on the pinion after the teeth?

i ordered them from my local permafast bolt place they didnt have them in stock but got them for me next day

Yes, the starter looked pretty much the same, the only visible difference was the motor end cover is steel not alloy.
I couldn't get any counter sink bolts locally or mail order quickly, but I managed to bolt the starter on without the bolt heads interfering. The starter motor solenoid is a bit closer to the floor than it could be, but it works for now!

Cheers
Stephen

I tried to mount the old diesel starter today on my TDI. But the starter locked the flywheel. Is the TDI flywheel too tight for the old starter?

Found some info at greaseworks:
Bosch SR28X rebuilt starter fits all stock diesel Vanagon bellhousings, 1.6, 1.9, 1.9TD, 1.9TDI.

Can be used with stock diesel Vanagon flywheel/pressure plate/clutch disc, or with slight mods (grinding on nose cone of starter) with the 1Z or G60 flywheel/press. plate/228mm WBX disc. Gear reduction motor for more revs with a smaller/lighter motor. This is the preferred starter for any 50* TDI Vanagon conversion. VW p/n: 068 911 023 DX, Bosch p/n: SR28X.

Why do I keep finding answers for my questions right after I've posted them? Happy
Anyway, I might create a adapter for the TDI starter later on.

TDI starter is the thing. I made an adapter and put the dimensions over here:

I'm looking in to whether there are any starter upgrades for the petrol bell housing / 130 tooth flywheel. I've read on other sites that a TDi starter can be made to work with the petrol bell housing / ring gear. I hope that's right, as it has a self supporting pinion, so gets rid of the need for the bush in the bell housing, but I'm not convinced.

The 130 tooth petrol flywheel uses a 9 tooth pinion on the starter.

I'm no diesel expert, but I believe the 132 tooth TDi flywheel uses a 10 tooth starter pinion? The photo's in this thread show a 10 tooth starter pinion too.

Maybe there is also a 9 tooth pinion (the same size as the petrol T25) used on some TDi's? I imagie some of you TDi / VW inline 4 conversion experts on here will know? Thanks,
